Carlota Ciganda

Quick Quotes

Q. Here with first-round leader so far Carlota Ciganda with a nice round of 4-under. What are your big takeaways from your success today?

CARLOTA CIGANDA: I played pretty solid. Started pretty good. Started on 10 so I birdied 11 and 12. Hit good shots and made some really good putts.

I had a double on 14, which was playing quite long this morning. But then I bounce back, birdie 15, 17, and then that's it was really good. So like I made a bogey the second hole, but then a couple good putts on 4, 5, and then I almost made an eagle on 7.

So pretty happy with 4-under on this golf course. It's a new course, quite hilly, so very co-would this morning so I thought it was quite tricky.

Q. I was going to ask about how the new golf course plays into this, and you're right, it was 50 degrees when we got up this morning and it's beautiful and bright and sunny now, but you saw a little bit of everything today. What's that like mentally?

CARLOTA CIGANDA: Yeah, I had (indiscernible) this morning so some shots the ball was flying 10 to 12 meters less, at least for me on the range.

I was like, I need to adjust this on the golf course because it was so cold. I mean, I was (indiscernible) on the fairways because I was just shaking almost.

But then, yeah, I start hitting good shots. I think it's important to hit as many greens as you can. The greens are really nice, very fast, one of the fastest we played on tour all year.

That's nice to see. Then just be patient. It's a course that you can make a couple bad swings, make a bogey or a double. One of the holes you have some wedges, birdie chances, and that's an advantage.

Very happy with the round.

Q. You've had some time to reflect back on the great week in Toledo. What are you your big takeaways from that? Anything you're pulling forward to this week or do you start fresh?

CARLOTA CIGANDA: Yeah, I love that week. I always say it's one of my favorite weeks to play for Europe, to be part of a team, to be with the girls, with the captain. Like it's just such a fun week for me. I love it. I give my 200% inside the golf course; outside I love to have fun as well.

And to be honest, I was quite tired. Last week it was just in the match, just went back to Phoenix, rest. I'm pretty good at that, so it was nice to just chill for a few days.

And then I only played here on Tuesday, no Pro-Am, so I think it was nice to have the day off yesterday as well. No golf on the course. Yeah, I feel good. Trying to take that momentum from the Solheim and have that here, hit good shots, and try my best.

Q. And then final question: The person right here before you, Laura Davies, one of your captains, what does it mean you have to to have someone like her still out here and still thriving? She has had such a great career. Still out among the leaders out here on tour.

CARLOTA CIGANDA: She's my hero. I think it's unbelievable for her to be here, to be playing, to be making cuts. I mean, when I started playing in Europe I played a lot with her. She is just different to everyone. Like I don't think there is anyone that can hit those shots with the shapes this she hits. Like the wedge she's so good, the driver. I mean, I think it's amazing and we are lucky that she's still playing and we can see her play.

I love how nice she is, how humble she is. I mean, Solheim Cup it was just so much fun to have her there and to be part of the team and her and Beany and Suzann, between the three of them, I think 30 Solheim Cups, so I think we are very lucky to have them on the team.
