Daniel Gavins

Quick Quotes

Q. Welcome back to Galgorm Castle. I suspect this is your happy place. How nice to be back at this venue?

DANIEL GAVINS: It feels really good. I was just walking around a few holes. My clubs haven’t quite made it here yet, and I was remembering shots that I hit last year. It’s nice to be back.

Q. Is it a surreal feeling to see your face plastered all over the place?

DANIEL GAVINS: It is, actually. It’s not happened before because it was my first win. It’s nice coming into the entrance and seeing all these posters up.

Q. You started the final day seven shots back. What are your memories of that final round?

DANIEL GAVINS: I was quite a distance behind, so I wasn’t under pressure in a way. I just went out and tried to make as many birdies as possible. I got a few early on and then a few nice putts were holed.

I built up and built up and saw on the 17th I was nearly in the lead.

I played the 18th like I had done all week, as a three-shotter, and thought, let’s see what happens.

I saw the last groups coming in. It was windy and they were falling back a bit. I saw on 18th he was three off the tee and couldn’t quite make par. It was nice to get the first win.

Q. What do you make of this venue? What does it take to play well around here?

DANIEL GAVINS: There’s not many drivers around here for me. I know they’ve changed a few holes since last year. 9 has changed, There’s more of a hazard down the left. There’s a tee a long way back on 15 or 16 making it tougher. It’s a good test of golf.

Q. This is a unique event. How important are these types of events for the future of golf?

DANIEL GAVINS: It worked well last year. The pace of play was better than it usually is. It’s a positive and it gives the women more media and exposure, so it’s good.

Q. Your form unfortunately isn’t the best at moment; four missed cuts in a row. Does it feel like when you come to a venue you can take that out of your head because you know you can play well around here and go and enjoy your golf?

DANIEL GAVINS: That’s how I want to come into this week. I started the year really well. I made eight of the first ten cuts. The last few months has been a hard struggle really. I haven’t quite found it on the course.

I’ve been playing nicely, and last week I felt like my game was really nice. I just need to stay patient, but it’s hard in this game. You just want to do well every week. I just want to enjoy it again. I’m not enjoying it as much as I was at the start of the year. I think that’s the main thing for me, coming in and enjoying it a bit more, taking away the pressure of doing well, taking each week as it comes and keep it going that way.
