Quick Quotes

Q. With Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Another win for you guys on the American side. Same partner but different format. How different is it playing in this one versus yesterday?

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: I don't know. Obviously we're playing our own ball. So a couple more times at birdie, and we were able to take advantage of that.

Q. Yesterday, Patrick, we did this on the 13th green. We kind of thought we were going to do that on the 13th green again. It's really hard to win in match play. What's it like trying to close one of these things out?

PATRICK CANTLAY: You just have to stay in the moment as best you can and not get ahead of yourself. Tom making birdie on the par 3 down the hill with the water, that's a great birdie.

We played really well. When you get out to a lead like that, you kind of just tell yourself it's inevitable. Keep hitting quality shots to close it out.

Q. That hot start, 6-under through the first eight holes, that certainly put the key to victory today.

PATRICK CANTLAY: That's exactly what you want in this format. You have to be aggressive. I feel like when you can win a hole with an eagle when they're making birdie, that's a big bonus.

Q. They didn't go away, though. Down the stretch there, Xander, talk about how they put some pressure on you.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Yeah. You figure the 3 on whatever the hole, 17, would be good enough. What is that 13 now?

Q. It's 14 now.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Yeah, so Tom hit an incredible shot and a really good putt and birdied. Pat and I, unfortunately, better ball, normally one of us will save each other, but we hit two of our worst tee shots all week on the same hole. We knew if we just kept our heads down, we'd be able to pull it off.

Q. Can we say the monkey's off your backs? You guys were unbeaten in foursomes. This is your first win as teammates in four-ball. You guys knew that, right?

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: I did not know that.

PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, now that you say that, it is nice to get the monkey off our back. Hopefully we can get a bunch more wins in this format.

Q. Another great win for you guys. Patrick, a hot start again. How important have those starts been the first two matches to be able to close them out early?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I think hot starts are really big to match play to get the momentum on your side and force opponents to do something to catch back up. As opposed to when it's close, you're not pressing as much.

I think getting out to a lead in match play is huge, and we did a great job of that today.

Q. Xander, what was the key to the match for you guys, you think?

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: We got off to a good start. We ham and egged it. You go through the first few holes, we were just taking turns making putts or hitting quality shots.

I think we did a really good job early on of, when one of us -- we were both in position off the tee. One of us would take a more secure shot into the green, allowing the other to hit a more aggressive shot.

Q. Patrick, you guys obviously play so well together as a team and are friends. Did you learn anything more about each other as partners this week so far?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I mean, no. I feel like Melbourne, we played all of the first four matches with each other. Ever since, we've just felt really comfortable playing this format with each other.

The New Orleans tournament this year kind of secured that feeling between the two of us, and we're just going to ride that hot streak.
