Q. Obviously a pretty special day today. I know you would have liked to make that one on the last, but you must be very pleased with what you've done.
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I was really happy with today. I played great. Had a bunch of looks and made most of them. Took advantage of the par-5s and the drivable 4, and that's what you have to do around this place.
Q. Do you have to keep in mind how well you played when you know there was maybe two or three that were right there in the heart and you could have had even a world record standard today? You have to be happy with what you did, I suppose.
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, definitely. I hit good putts all day today. You can't make every single one as much as you'd like to. I'm very happy with how I played, and I'm in a good spot going into tomorrow.
Q. Run us through 18. Obviously you knew the birdie would be 59. What was your number in and then your read on the putt?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I had like 120 in the fairway and it was a perfect spot and I hit a big sand wedge and I thought I hit it high enough and it took a huge bounce when it landed. Then the putt probably carried a bit too much speed, and just missed it a little high.
Q. Last time you were here in a similar spot. You've had a win here, had a lot of top-10 finishes, two runner-ups. What's the plan tomorrow? You'll be up against Tom Kim it looks like in that final group.
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, same game plan. Get off to a hot start. No lead is safe around here because you can go so low and make so many birdies. I'll hit a bunch of drivers and hopefully have a bunch of looks.
Q. Dumb question, but why are you so good here?
PATRICK CANTLAY: I think I drive the ball in the fairway a lot here, and I'm not afraid of hitting driver on most every hole, so I have a lot of wedges into greens, and I have a lot of looks. If I make a bunch of putts, I can shoot low scores.
Q. Have you shot 59 at your home course or a practice round before?
PATRICK CANTLAY: I never have.
Q. So that was a pretty stressful putt you were looking at there?
PATRICK CANTLAY: I would have liked to have made it, yeah.
Q. Yesterday you were I won't say complaining but you were talking about the greens not being the way you would like to see them. What was different today? Were you just getting closer looks?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I wasn't complaining yesterday, just simply you asked the question, and I said how it was.
Yeah, hitting it closer definitely helps. It's a lot easier to make six-, seven- and eight-footers as opposed to 15-footers.
Q. I think your longest putt was nine feet through 15. What was going right in the iron game today? Just dialed in completely
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I had a bunch of wedges, and you get a bunch of good numbers, and I was pretty dialed in. I hit my numbers a lot better today than I did the first two days.
Q. At what point in the round did you start thinking that maybe 59 could be out there?
PATRICK CANTLAY: I started thinking it was possible on 16 green. I felt like I would need to make that to have a real good chance. Obviously left it a little short, but yeah, I didn't probably really think about it until about 16 green.
Q. Not your first 60, though; how is this one different from or what are the differences between this one and the one you had in Hartford as an amateur?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Biggest difference is I birdied 18 at Hartford, so I never really had a chance. I would have had to have holed it from like 160 yards. This one definitely felt like I was closer.
Q. What do you do for an encore, looking ahead to tomorrow?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Same game plan as the first three days, and it's going to take a low one again tomorrow. This golf course yields low scores, and I expect the same tomorrow. Everyone will be gunning for me, and I've got to shoot a low one.
