Q. 6-under, excellent start. If we can get some comments on your round.
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I started off strong and had a weird middle of the round, definitely gave a few away. And then closed really strong. So finishing with three in a row on this golf course is a really nice finish and I'm happy with my start for the week.
Q. What was the key to not getting really frustrated there toward the end of the front nine there?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Oh, I got frustrated, just a little less frustrated now birdieing the last three.
Q. How much did last year, I don't know if help is the right word, but just sort of change your view or help you come back here, as well as you played here last year, did those vibes carry over?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I played well here a few times, I really like it up here. It's just so beautiful. And when we get a week like this with good weather it's the best. So I'm really happy to be up here, I like the three golf courses, especially Pebble and Spyglass.
Q. On a week like this do you ever look at the long-range forecast when you're at multiple courses?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Weather?
Q. Yeah.
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah. It looks like this year there's not going to be too big of a difference, but definitely if you could pick for every year you would get the windiest day at Spyglass.
Q. The nicest day at Pebble?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Probably.
Q. When it's not doing anything and not supposed to do anything where's the best scoring in your view?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Probably here. I think here's probably the easiest, the most for giving and the 5s are really easy which I kind of botched a few of those today. The condition of the golf courses are much better than usual this week. They're absolutely great. I mean this is the fastest I've seen these greens by two feet. Which makes this place a lot tougher and you have to use your head a lot more.
Q. What makes Spyglass such a challenge?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Spyglass is, the greens are so undulating that you really have to leave your golf ball in the right spot. And there's a few hole locations that you really have to know exactly what you're doing. And it's lucky we don't play four rounds at that place because I don't know if there's four hole locations on every green.
Q. Do you, some guys have said they don't really look at the leaderboard much until everyone's played all three courses. It's unique compared to other events. Is that fair, do you -- how much can you really tell until everybody's played the same courses?
PATRICK CANTLAY: I think can you tell pretty good. I mean, I think that you definitely need to do your scoring here and depending upon how Spyglass is set up that could be really tough with the greens being bouncy, but if you look at the scores, year after year, they're always high teens. So before the week, unless you get any crazy weather, you should expect high teens.
Q. I wanted to ask one or thing, when you're playing with a kind of a corporate partner or even someone that you have a relationship with prior, does this at all feel like a member/guest to you? You would be the member, of course.
PATRICK CANTLAY: I haven't played very many member/guests, maybe not even one, to be honest.
Q. Why does that not surprise me.
PATRICK CANTLAY: But I know David and Ed pretty well. David really well just from time we spent together outside of this event. So it's really nice to play with a friend and someone that you enjoy spending time with.
Q. The member/guest logic for me is that you are bringing him into your world, I guess. Is this a normal tournament for you or is there part of you that is maybe more engaged than you normally would be?
PATRICK CANTLAY: I'm definitely more engaged, yeah, with my partner than I am with maybe some competition. But other than that it's a normal week, except the rounds take 45 minutes to an hour longer.
Q. You said you played Pebble at age 12. Do you have any enduring memory from that day? You forgot it at first.
PATRICK CANTLAY: I definitely remember just being enthralled with the views. I had never seen anything even remotely close.
I remember getting to the 7th green and just being blown away. I still have a little bit of that today or whenever I play it because it's such a breathtaking place.
