Quick Quotes

Q. How do you feel like you managed the kind of crazy weather conditions that were out here today during the second round?

JORDAN SPIETH: Yeah, I think we went off number 10 knowing we were going to have some rain really our front nine. The direction of the wind, I thought the very scorable holes at Monterey were going to play a little harder. So it was nice to get one on our opening hole and then just kind of hold on.

Hit a lot of good putts that kind of lipped out today. Could have been a lower round. But I don't think scores are moving significantly around, so still in it, but we got what looks like a tough couple days coming up with some wind and possibly some more rain.

Q. What did you feel like you did best today during your round?

JORDAN SPIETH: I drove the ball beautifully. I hit 13 out of 14 or, I guess there's five par-3s here, I think. So I hit -- I only missed one fairway today. The one I missed was just on the edge and it was fine. So keep driving the ball like that I should give myself more chances. Just got to tighten up some wedges and some chipping.

Q. We don't know exactly what the weather's going to be, but tomorrow specifically what do you feel like you have to do well at Pebble to maybe get yourself more into contention heading into Sunday?

JORDAN SPIETH: I think the first seven holes are important to get off to a good start. You have -- 5 is a tough hole but the rest of them you kind of get some wedges in your hand and a couple par-5s that are reachable.

So find fairways on those holes and just keep getting looks. I'm putting the ball really well. You hit some good putts that miss out here, you hit some that maybe aren't as good that sometimes go in. That's just the nature of just some wet poa annua.

The first seven holes are going to be key tomorrow because as that wind starts to pick up it's just going to be a hold on for dear life as we come in tomorrow.

Q. How would you convey, I guess you kind of just did, what Pebble's like when it's windy? Because it can be so benign when it's calm, right?

JORDAN SPIETH: Well, yeah, it's normally a tale of two nine. It goes out and comes in. The first 10 holes go out with a couple crosswinds in between. And then you turn around and you're typically coming into the wind on the way in. But the way it is this week with these kind of storms pushing from the south it's almost the opposite.

So trying to really be under par through 7, through 10, if you can be under par through 10 holes, maybe actually get some looks on the back nine you're not used to getting.

Some holes become quite a bit shorter. Like the 14th might be reachable if it's downwind. That's normally the hardest par-5 maybe on TOUR. And if it can be reachable and we can get two shots up by the green you might steal one there.

18 as well I know is downwind. That doesn't necessarily -- if you hit a good drive it makes it easier. Other than that it's a lot narrower off the tee.

So, versus these other two courses, Pebble you just have to be a little more precise. I just got to drive the ball the way I did today and like I said just tighten up some of the scoring clubs.

Q. (No Microphone.)

JORDAN SPIETH: The green got redone or else it would be even more. So it was more challenging before they redid it. So we got an easier pin tomorrow than we will on Sunday. But, yeah, I'll take a look at the scoring and take a look at the forecast and kind of build a plan. Pebble, you know, sometimes you go I think last year I shot 9-, year before I maybe shot 7- or something on Saturday. It doesn't look like that's going to be without making a lot of putts and hitting a lot of great shots. I think that a goal's going to be somewhere in the 3- to 4-under just based on the early forecast.

So you got to kind of set your sights on -- you want to shoot -- I'm going to hit every shot to try to shoot 18-under. But realistically it's going to be a challenging golf course, you have more club in than you're used to and you got to play pretty safe around there in spots.

Q. What's the vibe like on Saturdays at Pebble in this tournament?

JORDAN SPIETH: Yeah, it grows a bit from these first two days. The crowds get bigger. Jake starts going over and interacting and that more. If you embrace it and you kind of laugh, have a really good attitude about it, it can be one of the most fun rounds of the year.
