Sedrick Irvin

Postgame Media Conference

Stanford 30, Jose San State 29

Q. What was the mindset of the team the fourth quarter? You guys are down 12; you're able to sort of fight back. What was the mindset going into that stretch?

SEDRICK IRVIN: I think one thing we always talk about is not having any quit. This team, obviously we haven't had the success we wanted in recent years, one thing we knew we were going to do is fight, and we're going to fight for four quarters. Any team that's going to play us, we're going to fight for four quarters regardless of what the scoreboard said.

I think everybody knew what the mindset was. Coming out of halftime we knew we had to fight no matter how long it took. We just knew we had to fight to win.

Q. Talk about how fun was it to get the one-yard touchdown?

SEDRICK IRVIN: Yeah, that's the best one-yard carry of my life. Yeah, it was a beautiful moment. My freshman year around the similar time I scored a touchdown in literally the same spot, same yard line. It was kind of just like a déjà vu type of moment. I was really appreciative of it. Shoutout to the O-line, shoutout to CJ Williams? He made a great block. Shoutout Caden High. He made a beautiful catch. Ben threw a beautiful ball. Ben played a great game today. I love to see it and I'm just happy about it.

Q. Just talk about this running back room. So many different guys making plays all the time. Just talk about that.

SEDRICK IRVIN: Yeah, it's a beautiful thing to be surrounded by guys that are just so talented. I feel like we have a room that can do everything that is needed to do for running backs, and just coming to work with these guys every day makes you want to be better makes you want to be the best. I'm really appreciative of them top to bottom.

Q. You guys did a really good job in pass protection tonight. Tuna had -- on one of the key Tuna really blasted a guy and kept the play going. Talk about that side of things and how much pride you guys take in that aspect of the game.

SEDRICK IRVIN: That's the standard. The same way that falling forward or protecting the ball is the standard, protecting the quarterback is the standard. We know if we do a great job of keeping Ben up and let him throw the ball and be safe back there he's going to make the plays that we need to win.

We all know what it takes to protect to quarterback and what protecting the quarterback can do for the team. We know what it takes to do that.

Q. So of course the coach, this is first go-around, but how much did you guys get together and say, we have to avenge what happened last year in San Jose? How much of an importance was it to get this win on The Farm?

SEDRICK IRVIN: Oh, it is very, very important. Think last year kind of going into the game we didn't realize how big of a rivalry it was until we got to the game. It was almost like a shock factor. I hate to say that it was a shock factor, but it was. And I think Sunday as soon as we got back into facility after we got back we were all saying, this isn't going to go the same way it went last year. We knew how important it was. We had the Bill Walsh trophy up all week. We had it up all week, and that was the first time seeing it for some guys, even if the guys had been here for four years.

We all knew how important this game was and how important it was to get this W, but not only that, just how important it was for the season. A game like this, just fighting back, does a lot for a team.

Q. You touched on Bill Walsh. What do you guys know about him and his legacy?

SEDRICK IRVIN: Basically just told us how he went to San Jose State and came over to Stanford to coach. Obviously we knew how great of a coach he was and how much he did for Stanford and kind of transformed the identity of Stanford football, and that's something we're really appreciative of.
