Quick Quotes

Q. J.J., 65 today. Just tell us about your round to start.

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, just got off to a pretty solid start. Made a few pars on the first couple holes and then a nice birdie on 3. Just kind of took what it gave me and took the opportunities when they came and capitalized on it. It was a pretty solid round overall.

Q. Can you speak to the windy conditions being different today than maybe the previous two days?

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I think it was pretty similar to yesterday afternoon. I played in the afternoon yesterday. It was the same wind direction almost exactly the same. Almost every tee shot is the same. Every single shape is the same as yesterday. It was nice to have a good round yesterday with this wind direction and using that as confidence that this wind direction, I can play well in it. That's what we did today.

Q. Two years ago, T12 finish here. Do you like the way the course suits your game?

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah. I haven't done -- I've been really hot or cold here I feel like. I feel like I've missed the cut here more than made the cut. I think it just kind of is boiling down to experience and learning how to play this track.

It helps being more ready, I guess, at the start of the season instead of being lazy over the winter and not doing much. I did a lot of playing, so my game felt pretty good coming into this week.

Q. Did you set goals for the season?

J.J. SPAUN: No, not really. Obviously win. Every week when you tee it up you're trying to win. I haven't really done extended future goals, but I'm just trying to take every week as it comes and add them up and see what happens.

Q. What's the mindset going into tomorrow?

J.J. SPAUN: I've felt pretty calm and relaxed out there. It's been a fun week here in Hawai'i. It's always laid back and easy going. I've kind of been carrying that mindset on the course, and it's easy to feel that way when things are going your way and you're playing well. Yeah, just try to hone in on that tomorrow and see what happens.

Q. So Cal native, just thoughts on the fires and if that's part of your process this week?

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, it's pretty tragic. Fortunately but unfortunately I don't have any family or friends in that region that have been affected but I know a lot of people that know people that were affected, and it's devastating. My grandpa lives in Venice Beach and luckily he's south enough to stay away. He's really close to it. But yeah, we haven't had any close calls or anything with people I know, so I'm glad that that region of my family, everyone is safe.

But yeah, it's sad to see. You just try to keep up with what you hear on the news every night. It was crazy last night at my hotel, someone pulled the fire alarm at 1:00 in the morning and we had to all evacuate, so I was like, what is going on. It was kind of crazy and ironic at the same time. But yeah, thoughts and prayers are with those in LA.
