D. MEDVEDEV/M. Landaluce
1-6, 6-4, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Thoughts on the match...
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I mean, happy to win a tough match. But on clay I feel like there is more momentum swings. So I'm happy that I managed to get back into the match after the first set, then back into the match after the third.
In the end I felt like I actually maybe physically, maybe tennis-wise, I felt like I was playing better than him. Just didn't manage to use all the opportunities I had completely.
But I'm happy that I managed in the end to push through and get the win.
Q. (Question about aggressive play.)
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Especially on clay, I feel like you cannot be aggressive all the time unless it's your game style, and it's not mine. A couple of match points, I was, He could miss in important moments before. It was a tough choice to go for the winner. I can miss or do I let him go for the winner? He made some great shots in this moment.
Tomorrow I know that defensively, not easy to stay defensively. Going to try to be kind of aggressive. But it's clay court tennis.
Q. (Question about playing Jannik.)
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I need to think a lot about my tennis. I played Jannik in Indian Wells, of course it's not a clay court, but I put up a good fight. Close in one set. Let's put it this way. That's what I'm going to try to do.
Jannik is a great player, best in the world. It's a great test to try to do my best.
Q. You had to play so many new faces, faces you never faced before. Reaching this stage, how do you feel you navigated that?
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: It's true that it's pretty crazy when you're 30 years old to get to the semifinal of Masters playing three guys you've never played. That's pretty unreal.
I feel like I've done well. I won all the matches, and that's the most important. Playing good tennis as well, so I'm looking forward.
Q. From all those new faces to a familiar one.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: It's going to be interesting. First match on clay. I wonder how his game is on clay. Of course, I know it's good, but does he put maybe more topspin than hard courts, does he play exactly the same. It's going to be interesting.
Of course, same for me. I do play a bit differently on clay than on hard courts. It's going to be a great test for me because I feel like on clay maybe I didn't face as many top clay court players as maybe on other surfaces because sometimes I lose earlier. So it's going to be interesting for me.
Q. In general, how high do you feel your level is right now?
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I think it's quite high. Was really high end of the previous match with Tirante. Was super high on practices. First set Martin played unreal. I actually don't know if my level was bad in the set, of course 6-1, or if his level was too good because he took every ball early, everything on the line, stuff like this.
I think, again, if we come to the third set, my level was really, really high. I'm happy about it. Of course, when you play Jannik, you need your level pretty high.
Q. Can you tell us what is the strategy you would think to play on clay against Sinner, that you have never played on clay?
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Very easy: to play like Martin played the first set, go full power and every ball on the line.
It's a small joke, but in a way to beat Jannik you need to play your best tennis, which we're not crazy, I'm not going to touch the line on every shot. You need to have a good day so that your shots are working, your serve is working, you put him under pressure. It's not easy to do this kind of stuff.
Again, it's tennis, it's sports, everything is possible. He's losing much less than he's winning. As my friend Andrey said, he's going to lose at one moment. When I step on the court, I will try to make him lose the next match.
Q. The dropshot is something that bothers you? Tonight he made so many because you were staying very much behind.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: It depends how you do the dropshot. Tirante did a lot as well. If you don't do it perfect, I'm there. If you do it like Martin did today, you can do it a lot, and it's going to work a lot of times.
Like any other shot, it bothers me if it's too good and I cannot reach it. Then if it's not good, I want to say, Do it more.
Jannik, whatever he does, is usually good. I hope tomorrow he does some bad dropshots.
