Wuhan, Hubei, China

Wang Xinyu

Press Conference

WANG XINYU/J. Pegula

6-3, 7-5

THE MODERATOR: Can you tell us about the match.

WANG XINYU: I felt like today was a very close match. In the two sets I had a couple of break points. I put a lot of pressure on her with my returns. That was really good. That was the highlight of this match.

When I first went into this match, I wasn't thinking too much about the result. I was just fighting for each point. I really enjoyed every moment.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in English first.

Q. In terms of your 2-0 record now against Jess, both beating her at Wimbledon and now here, what is it about the matchup that seems to work well for you?

WANG XINYU: Well, I think coming to the match, I was thinking last time we played on grass, I tried some serve and volley, some slices. It was working really good. I was like, Okay, so this time we're playing on hard court. These two obviously are not going to work, at least not that much.

I mean, I know she's a tough player. I know I have to play my best tennis to have the chance to beat her. I mean, I'm super happy with my performance today.

THE MODERATOR: Chinese questions.

Q. Last night you had a late match. How did you recover to face the match today?

WANG XINYU: After the match last night, I did my therapy. It was about 11:00 in the evening. I like to sleep for 10 hours, more than 10 hours every day. I did not have enough sleep last night.

Today in the morning I came here, did warm-up, did everything in my routine. The most important thing for me was that I was relaxed coming into this match. Mentality-wise, I was fighting for every point.

Q. Your opponent next round is Alexandrova. What is your preparation for the next round?

WANG XINYU: I played her two times. I actually practiced with her. I understand she plays really fast. For tomorrow, the most important thing is to be myself, to play my game.

I will focus on my service games. I can do better so that I have less pressure on the returns.

Q. You and Pegula are playing both singles and doubles. This time you're focusing on singles, whereas Pegula plays singles and doubles. Is it because she is tired playing so many matches? Also you have a very busy schedule. How do you balance between singles and doubles?

WANG XINYU: I think doubles people like to play both because in doubles the victory brings you confidence, to some extent. If my body permits, I look forward to playing doubles because this is very beneficial to myself. I learn a lot from doubles. But you need to have a balance.

Q. Good performance in Wimbledon. First time in the final eight at a 1000 level. Would you say you're a more all-around player, you have more tools?

WANG XINYU: On clay and grass, I did pretty well. On hard courts we had the Olympics. After the Olympics I did not have that much time to train on hard courts. Slowly through matches I found my game on the hard courts. I made some adjustments accordingly.

Very happy to be back in China with a great performance here.

Q. You talked about your victory over Pegula at Wimbledon, as well as the win today. Did it bring you any mental confidence from the victory last time?

WANG XINYU: I think the advantage was that I was more relaxed this time. On the grass I was using volleys and slices, which brought me success. Today before the match I talked to myself that on the hard court it will be a completely different game.

To me, I was more relaxed to fight for each point. I think that was a really good mentality.
