WANG XINYU/E. Alexandrova
4-6, 7-5, 7-6
THE MODERATOR: Wang Xinyu, you are advancing to the semifinal. Could you share your thoughts on today's match.
WANG XINYU: There were some ups and downs in the match. She played very well. I felt a lot of pressure from her returns. In the tiebreak in the third set, it was a roller coaster tiebreak. It was just down to the last two points.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English, please.
Q. In terms of making a semifinal this big, what do you think has been the key this week to getting this result? What is your general feeling about being able to do it in China?
WANG XINYU: Yeah, I'm super happy that I made it to my first semifinal in China. It's extra, like, special feeling for me. Playing in front of the home crowd here, I really enjoyed it.
I mean, it was really tough, tough match. Both us, we left everything out there. It all came down to I think few points, especially in the tiebreak.
Yeah, I'm just super happy to get through to the next round.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in Chinese.
Q. You saved two match points. Could you talk about how you dealt with this.
WANG XINYU: I remember the second match point. It was 5-6 in the tiebreak before I served. I saw the photographers were running to that side. They wanted to capture the end of the match. Those two points were served by me. High-quality, good serves. Those were very critical points.
Going back to the first set, I wasn't really adapting to her play. I was feeling a lot of pressure from her. I needed to change things up.
After the first set, I was serving very well.
Q. This is a breakthrough in your singles career. Will that boost your confidence? We have seen your breakthroughs in the doubles. Do you have higher expectations, ambitions in the Grand Slams, for example, finals or championships?
WANG XINYU: When I first came to Wuhan, I wasn't really 100% like what you described. In recent weeks on hard courts, I was losing matches. I wasn't at a level where I felt 100% confident.
In the doubles in the French Open, in the Olympics, all of those breakthroughs came as a little bit of a surprise. I wasn't really expecting it.
^ I think under such conditions I might be able to make a breakthrough under these circumstances when I wasn't really expecting it.
I will just focus on each match. I just like to enjoy each match, to ^ accumulate my experiences on that basis.
Q. You just talked about the photographers running to the end. I was one of them. Of course, we were hoping that you could win.
WANG XINYU: It was 5-6 and you were running (laughter).
Q. But your opponent had two match points. How did you deal with that? Did you get any boost of confidence from the crowd? When you play overseas, you face difficult moments like this. Do you feel you enjoy the match more in Wuhan?
WANG XINYU: Of course, everybody loves coming back to their home country. I can feel the support from the crowd. There's a lot of love and support.
But during a match, at critical moments, it really comes down to yourself. You have to deal with the difficult situations by focusing on your form, focusing on the point.
It's like 6-All in the tiebreak. I was serving a second serve. I tried something different. I was hitting to the forehand. I changed. I hit to the backhand.
A lot of the times you just need to believe in yourself and to execute what you have in mind.
Q. Your opponent will be the winner between Qinwen and Jasmine. Which would you look forward to playing?
WANG XINYU: Well, these are tough opponents. They're really strong. No matter who I face, I am really happy to be in my first semifinal at the 1000 level. Whoever I face, it will be a great match.
