Wuhan, Hubei, China

Wang Xinyu

Press Conference

ZHENG QINWEN/Wang Xinyu

6-3, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Could you tell us your thoughts about the match.

WANG XINYU: I felt like today, both of us had many chances, opportunities. I had many break points, but I wasn't able to convert them. I saw the gap between us. There's so many things I need to improve through this match. I am presenting a performance against a top player. I'm happy with my performance today.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Chinese.

Q. You never played her on the tour. Regarding this match, did you do any specific preparations? You were changing things up a little bit in the match. Could you talk about this.

WANG XINYU: Before this match, I saw more or less her videos. I never played her on the tour. First of all, she has been in very good form with big breakthroughs this year.

Entering this match, I was more willing to make changes. If I remained conservative, if I did not initiate my chances, I wouldn't have any chance against top players.

Q. After the China Open to the Wuhan Open, are you happy with your performances? What is your plan going forward?

WANG XINYU: I thought it was pretty good. Coming back to the China season, I had high expectations. I was really looking forward to a better performance in front of the crowd.

Coming back to China this year, I had a good mentality. I was learning to enjoy myself in front of the home crowd. I was able to enjoy the support from the people around me.

I will continue to work harder.

Q. This year has been really good for you. Breakthroughs at Wimbledon as well as the Olympics. This is your first semi in a 1000 tournament. What are the improvements this year and what are the next steps to take?

WANG XINYU: I think this year to me, I played tournaments, major events. Every week I played top-50, top-30 players. This for me as a professional player has taught me a lot. I have improved a lot. This is a very initial stage for me. Looking at this, I became more confident in myself. I see things I can improve on through these matches. This is a big encouragement for me.

Q. Interesting crowd tonight. The crowd was cheering for you as well as Qinwen. Both of you received a lot of support. Talk about Chinese men and women's tennis.

WANG XINYU: I think in the past two years not only women but also men players are doing better and better. This is really good for tennis. After the Olympics, I could see that many people gained a better understanding of tennis, paid attention to tennis tournaments.

From my perspective, like the match today, I was playing a semifinal with a Chinese player. No matter who I played, it was a breakthrough for me, a very important match at a 1000 level. It was very meaningful to me.

I had tough battles this week. Through these matches, I really learned a lot.

Q. Was there any injury to your knee? I saw your knee go to the ground.

WANG XINYU: Because I'm tall, I was kneeling a little bit close to the ground. Because of this, I always get bruises on my knees. Nothing unusual.

Q. Qinwen said you grew up together. In the semifinal tonight, would that have any negative impact on you because you were so familiar with each other?

WANG XINYU: Of course, we are one generation as junior players. But in the recent two years, we did not really play each other as we were progressing fast. We are very different players compared to our junior years.

Of course, sometimes you play someone you're familiar with. You play a very familiar name. Considering we grew up together, when I face her, I do not see her as a top-five player, I do not see someone as a Grand Slam champion, so this is what you call a level of familiarity.
