THE MODERATOR: E. NAVARRO/E. JONES
6-3, 6-3
THE MODERATOR: Emerson, tough one today against a very good player. Just give us your overall takeaways from the match today.
EMERSON JONES: Yeah, I think I didn't play my best tennis today. Well, not as good as I would like to. But she's a great player and top 10 for a reason. So, yeah.
Q. You showed some solid signs in that first set, particularly when you got down a break, and then you were hitting it nice on that forehand wing. Did you start a bit nervous or did you feel like you worked your way into the match pretty nicely?
EMERSON JONES: I just think I was a bit flat today, to be honest. I guess that happens. Yeah, I think I definitely started playing better tennis during the match rather than the start. But, yeah, I'm pretty happy with how I was in the middle of the match. The starts of both sets I wasn't quite there. But, yeah, I definitely got it back to where I probably wanted to.
Q. After the match your opponent said she's going to watch you pretty closely over the journey. She thinks Australia's got a good one here. That's a pretty good rap to have from an opponent who's been in the top 10 a lot.
EMERSON JONES: Yeah, I think that's pretty cool. Any compliment you get from a top 10, and especially her. She's such a great player, and her game's, it's really hard to play against her. So, yeah, I think that's pretty cool that she said that.
Q. Your experience at Melbourne last year and this year, how much better prepared do you think you're going to be? There was a lot of hype around you when you went to the AO last year, but do you draw on that, and what did you learn for this year?
EMERSON JONES: Yeah, I'm pretty excited to play AO again this year. It was pretty tough last year. I know what to expect because I've had so many opportunities last year and this year during the summer.
So, yeah, I think I am ready, and I know what to expect. I played a couple of top 10, top 20s, and the whole level pretty much. So, yeah, I think I'm ready for it.
Q. The general experience last year, was it a bit of a blur?
EMERSON JONES: Yeah, a bit, to be honest, because I wasn't really in the match last year. But I definitely learned a few things from her, playing her. So that's something I can take out of it.
Yeah, I guess that's what you get when you play a top 10 or a top 20, you just learn stuff in the match and you know what to improve on when you play them next, and also the level. So I think that's pretty special.
Q. You had a bit of a breakout last year. Do you feel a certain different weight of expectation from the outside and from yourself this year, and is that something you embrace?
EMERSON JONES: Yeah, I mean, last year it was all so new to me. I never played a 500 before or anything. So it was all so new, and I had no expectations on me.
But now as I'm getting older I want to be a bit harder on myself and really tell myself that I can step up if I really want to.
So, yeah, I think in Brisbane I did that well. Today I just wasn't quite there. I do really want to win a couple of rounds at big tournaments, because I've seen the level, and I can keep up with it, I just got to improve a few things and, yeah.
