Madison Keys

Press Conference

M. KEYS/L. Fernandez

6-1, 7-5

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. What were your keys to closing out that win?

MADISON KEYS: Definitely making some first serves and just really staying in it and resetting after having those set points and not being able to convert them. Just really quickly resetting, not dwelling on it and moving forward.

But, I mean, she is such a great fighter. I kind of expected it. But, yeah, I was really happy to be able to close out that set the way that I did.

Q. Can you tell us about your next match against Victoria Azarenka.

MADISON KEYS: I'm looking forward to it. I haven't played Vika -- I think we've only played once, but I'm not the best at remembering matches so I could be wrong. But I'm really looking forward to it.

She's obviously playing some really impressive tennis the past 18 months. I know it's going to be a really difficult match, super high intensity. I'm going to go practice very hard tomorrow to be ready for that.

Q. How do you feel? Everything is good for you physically?

MADISON KEYS: Everything is good. Yeah, feeling good and happy to get the win today. But, yeah, all in all feeling good and excited for my match, not tomorrow but the day after.

Q. You haven't played a lot over the last year and a half. Though you haven't racked up a lot of wins on clay, you've been consistent, and develop your form. Do you feel like you're picking up form as you go, feel much better about your game?

MADISON KEYS: Definitely. I think this is the first time in a while for me to be able to have consistent matches in a row on the same surface. Even being able to, like in Madrid, I think I played Pav really close. She was obviously playing really well that week.

Then in Rome to be able to get a win, be able to play a couple matches, then get a little bit more practice on clay, I'm feeling like I'm finding my rhythm a bit more. It's been really good to do that, have that kind of stretch of tournaments since I haven't had that for a while.

Q. You've been really good in Paris, 2018, 2019. Last year may be an aberration because of the conditions. How difficult was it to play here last year in those conditions compared to today?

MADISON KEYS: Definitely very different conditions than when we were last year. But I think all in all you can have days like today, then you can also have days where it's cold and heavy, so you have to be ready for anything.

I'm definitely more happy when it's beautiful and sunshine in Paris.
