Quick Quotes

Q. Adam Scott, I'm just wondering if you could talk about what he means to people in your part of the world.

RYAN FOX: Obviously as a person I'd love Scotty to win, I know him really well. Not quite a New Zealander.

Q. You'll claim him?

RYAN FOX: We're not going to claim him. Aussies claim enough of our stuff. We're not going to claim him. To have him -- he goes down to play in New Zealand and Australia a lot. He's a great ambassador for the southern hemisphere. I know all of Australia will be tuning in early in the morning to watch. I'm sure there will be a lot of New Zealanders watching as well and pulling for him.

Q. It's incredible he's been playing like this since the '90s. What can you say about his longevity?

RYAN FOX: It's incredible. 96 in a row. Not just to be at that level, to not have any injury or miss one through illness or whatever, that's incredible. I saw his drive up the last yesterday at 187 miles an hour, that's crazy at almost 45 years old. It's great to see him still going well, and I think he's probably got a few more good years left.

Q. What makes him such a great ambassador?

RYAN FOX: Just does everything great. He's great with you guys. As I said, he goes down and plays in Australia a lot. That might not be able to said about some other guys, but he's always gone down.

Look at his golf swing and everything like that, it's just kind of perfection, isn't it? He's a really easy guy to root for.

Q. He can also be an easy guy to hate because he makes it look so easy, but the whole world loves him. How does he carry himself?

RYAN FOX: Just he's a super nice guy, and it just comes out. He doesn't say anything that's too controversial or anything like that. He just stays the course. He's done it for so long. It's hard -- you watch him swing a golf club, and it's hard not to drool over that, and I think that just kind of flows through into everything else. He's just loved.

Q. When did you find out that you're going to play as a single today? Have you played as a single in any tour before in this kind of situation?

RYAN FOX: I found out on the range. Corey came up to me and said, Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to go today. He hurt his wrist yesterday apparently, and it was no good this morning, which is a real shame for him.

I was looking forward to playing with him. He's a really nice guy. I've played with him a few times.

I think the only other time I played as a single was in the U.S. Open at L.A. Country Club. I technically had a marker and I think we got around in like three hours and five minutes in a two-ball. At LACC that's pretty good. I think we beat the next group behind us by like an hour.

It's frustrating in the middle of the field to be a one-ball than it is at the start. But I had a great marker from here, Gavin, who's one of the assistant pros. We chatted all the way around. Thankfully it's two-ball and kind of moves pretty quickly for the most part. I waited kind of most shots but it wasn't for that long. It was just a nice, leisurely stroll out there. To be honest, I probably would have waited a whole lot less if I hadn't had played as well as I did. I hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens, had a couple of kick-in birdies. It doesn't help the pace of play and the waiting, but I enjoyed it out there. The fans are great.

I got a few jokes about being a single and people coming out and going, I'll be your partner and go out and shoot 150. I'm sure that's on the low side too for some of them, but it was nice out there.

Q. To touch on it, to shoot an under-par round here on a Sunday given the circumstances, given any circumstance, you have to be pretty proud of that.

RYAN FOX: Very much so. I kind of didn't see it the last couple of days. I kind of had a little patch where I made a few birdies and basically was hacking it out of the crap the rest of the day. Today was really, really solid. Probably left a couple out there on the greens, but for the most part, I kept myself out of trouble all day.

I think I only missed two or three fairways and only missed two or three greens as well. If you can do that around here, it feels like there is a score. I can see the other way pretty quickly if you start missing shots. It just eats you up.

Q. Tour schedule doesn't stop. You're in Connecticut for the next stop. What are you most pleased with as you head there from here? What do you think you're going to be working on most from this?

RYAN FOX: I definitely won't be working on much. It's been a pretty long -- probably long six weeks for me from Myrtle Beach. I qualified for PGA last minute. Then got into Memorial because of that. Then Canada and got into here last minute from Canada. I'd say I'm running on fumes a little bit.

Today was just trusting that the golf game was in good shape, and I hit a lot of good shots, had a good feeling out there. That will kind of be the same next week, just go and trust that the game's in decent shape and see what happens.

Q. When you're playing as a single out there, how are you able to pace yourself compared to when you're playing with someone else?

RYAN FOX: I'm not very good at it. I'm generally regarded as one of the faster guys out there. To be honest, I just hung back and talked to my caddie instead of I'd normally just wander down the field straight after a shot and talk to someone. I just kind of hung back and talked to Gavin, my caddie, and we just had a nice leisurely stroll, to be honest.

There was no way I could pace myself to not be right up the guys' behinds. It is what it is. I played great. I didn't feel like there was too many holes where I waited for more than a minute or so. Yeah, the pace of play was pretty good out there.

Q. Was there a specific element of your game that you felt clicked for you today?

RYAN FOX: Driver. It's been a bit hit and miss this week. I've had patches where I've driven it really well and then hit a couple of average ones into the rough. It's a hard golf course in that respect. You feel under pressure on the tee the whole time because, if you don't drive it on the fairway, you're dead basically.

Today I hit everything really, really well off the tee. As I said, I didn't miss many fairways. Not saying this golf course is easy by any stretch, but it's definitely a little easier from the fairway than it is hacking it out from the rough.
