Q. Tough round. What happened? You just couldn't put together enough shots there. Was it the course?
ADAM SCOTT: I don't know. It was kind of -- it was tough. It was bad conditions. No one really had a good score. I missed the fairway. I hadn't done that all week really. Then I did, and I paid the price and lost a lot of shots out there. Couldn't recover. Conditions were just tough. They were tough at the start. It was very windy. Hadn't been that windy all week. Front nine played tough.
Then once the fairways were soaked, it was very hard controlling the golf ball.
Q. How would you describe what it was like to be out there for several hours today? It just seemed like whoever held on the tightest was going to win?
ADAM SCOTT: Look, it just wasn't easy out there. All things being equal, it's Sunday of the U.S. Open, one of the hardest setups, and the conditions were the hardest of the week. Thank God it wasn't like this all week.
Q. How was the rain delay? And then with the restart?
ADAM SCOTT: Look, I felt better before the rain delay, that's for sure. I went back out feeling okay, but then I left every kind of tee shot to the right coming in, and that was impossible to recover from almost.
Q. You're sleeping on being in the final group and things like that, was that different at all than past experiences you've had with majors in your sights?
ADAM SCOTT: Not really. It was good. I slept fine. I was looking forward to it. Although the conditions were tough at the start, I felt good. I felt like I was under control. I was kind of annoyed at myself. I hit a really weak putt on like the 6th, and then I felt like, Oh, I've let one go there, better toughen up a little bit and not do that.
It was just so sloppy the rest of the way. Sam, we must have looked horrible, both of us playing like that. But that's what can happen in these things. If you get a little off, you're just severely punished.
Q. Did it still feel like a U.S. Open when you come back out after a weather delay and you're playing these crazy conditions?
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, of course it does. These kind of things happen all the time. Some people go home, and some people get a bit more rowdy when you come back out. It's a slightly different atmosphere. It can affect the rhythm of things. Unfortunately, I think the course just couldn't take much more water really.
I didn't adapt to those conditions well enough.
Q. Did you think they were going to restart? Like, were you positive you were heading back out, or had you started to think we might be coming back tomorrow?
ADAM SCOTT: No, it seemed like, from when they called it, there was a good chance we'd be restarting.
Q. Were you aware of the ruling he got?
ADAM SCOTT: What ruling is this?
Q. For Sam. He didn't get a ruling. He asked for one twice after the restart. It looked like casual water. He didn't get it.
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, I know. I was thinking of asking as well. It was borderline unplayable. The water was like so close to the surface. Like the shot I hit on 11, it's bizarre. I just don't know. It was like an aquaplane on the ground.
He tried to hit a 5-iron, I guess, on the 15th, and it's tough. It's a tough call, but we played. Everyone had to deal with it.
