Hae Ran Ryu

Flash Interview

Q. We're here with Hae Ran Ryu, 3-under 69. Can you talk us through your round?

HAE RAN RYU: Well, the beginning was not as good as I expected, but I got three birdies in a row, so I had a very good rhythm.

I think that the last one was also excellent, so I feel good about it.

Q. How special is it to be here at Pebble Beach?

HAE RAN RYU: I came here one week ago and I looked around the area, the surroundings, and just like with the reputation, it's really beautiful, and the course is absolutely beautiful, and I got to also see sea lions and I was able to look around, and it was very good.

Q. What's your game plan for tomorrow?

HAE RAN RYU: Well, I think that I'll be playing tomorrow afternoon, and I think it will be windier, so I need to focus on the accuracy of my shot, and I will work hard on that.

Q. You had a really strong finish. Did the course improve? Did your game come in? What happened?

HAE RAN RYU: Usually looking at the scores, today after bogey, I got a birdie, so I was able to recover, and on No. 6, I missed the green on the right side. It was a very, very difficult shot, but I was able to do the chip shot and recover there, as well.

Q. Can you tell us about holes 4 and 5 and 6 and your approach on those holes and your strategy, how you played them?

HAE RAN RYU: I don't quite remember No. 4. Well, you're asking me about No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, and I think there are two short holes, and I think No. 5 is a par-3 and I did not expect to get a birdie, but I got a birdie so I was happy about that. 4 and 6 I hit a wedge and luckily it was accurate, and I think my strategy worked.

Q. Same question about 18. Can you talk us through your strategy and how you played 18?

HAE RAN RYU: On the 18th hole there was a tee shot and there was a tree in the middle so I was kind of worried what if it gets caught there. I hit very strongly, and it worked out. I was kind of debating whether I should use third shot or not, but I decided to go with the wedge, and I think that's the decision that I made with respect to the layout.

Q. This was your fourth U.S. Women's Open; did you take any lessons from your previous appearances here that maybe will help you this week?

HAE RAN RYU: I have a coach in Korea, and he's an excellent coach, but he has many players under him, so I took a lot of videos and I send it to him, and I also share my feelings and impressions of that, and then he helped me adjust some shots.

In the U.S. I have James who helps me with the short game in the U.S., so he also helped me a lot with the rough shots, and I think that I actually -- his coaching actually helped with the three shots.

Also in Korea I have a specialty coach, and he came all the way here from Korea, and he's been helping me, as well.
