United States Quick Quotes

Q. Talk us through that first session there.

NATHAN SMITH: Well, they really came out extremely hot, and I think before you knew it, a lot of our matches, the first couple matches were 2-down through three holes. A lot of birdies. They just played well. We felt good about our match-ups, our teams. We'll have to look at that for tomorrow morning, see if we switch anything up.

I think a lot of the guys still feel good, but we might mix a couple pairings up. But for the most part, they just played great.

Q. Did anything surprise you, anything out of the ordinary in that morning session?

NATHAN SMITH: I think they just played great. So many quality shots from them, honestly. Just out of the gate, just birdies, great shots. Every time I seemed to pull up, they were stuffing something in there.

Q. How much of Jase's and Michael's match did you see, and what was working for them?

NATHAN SMITH: I watched it. They played solid. They played solid. They hit a lot of great shots. They had a few holes that were maybe given to them, but they hit a lot of quality shots it seemed like. It was huge to get that point.

I think if you look at it, we've got to have a big afternoon. There are a lot of points -- last year's team spotted us a half point, so in reality you kind of feel like you're maybe only down 3 to like 1½, but still, it's a dogfight. They're great. They've got a great team. We knew that coming in.

Q. Being in this position, there's a couple guys in there who faced a similar deficit at St Andrews. Is that something you bring up, don't worry, it's just one session?

NATHAN SMITH: I hope so. I think they all know that they're capable, and I think we just need to go out this afternoon and take care of business and get ready to play. We need to have a nice session this afternoon.
