THE MODERATOR: Belinda, congrats on the win. First win on the North American hard court season. How did you feel being on court?
BELINDA BENCIC: Thank you. I'm really glad with the win. I'm really glad I'm playing here again. I really like Toronto and this tournament.
Yeah, it was a first round, which is a little bit tough. I had some challenges after Wimbledon, you know, with a little ongoing injury, so wasn't really sure that I'm going to play here, so I'm really happy that I made it and won the first round.
THE MODERATOR: If you have a question, please raise your hand.
Q. I wanted to ask you about 2015 and your win here. I was looking at the draw, and the opponents you beat was kind of like an insane draw that you got to play against and win. How much did you view that as a big breakthrough for you, and how much do you think about it in hindsight later on in your career?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yes, I think this was for sure my breakthrough tournament. I remember every part of it. Obviously that draw was crazy. I kind of just played as a free 18 year old.
So it was very, very nice memories, and I definitely will always have that when I play here. Yeah, it's just a really nice moment of my career.
Q. That time would have been a long time ago, but this time you're a mom now. I wonder what the tournament has set up in terms of the backbone for resources for a mom, for kids around a tournament. I'm not sure if your kids are here or not.
BELINDA BENCIC: I just have one kid.
Q. What are the resources for the players in the tournament for a mom with kids?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yes, I thought it's a really nice moment when I was an 18 year old playing here. I didn't think that I would be playing here when I have a child.
But, yeah, she's here with us, and the tournament is very nice. They said that they would provide an extra room paid for the moms that have the, that are traveling with the kids, so you have a bit more space for your team and all your luggage and everything. It's really nice from the tournament.
I, in general, think the tournaments are getting so much better at helping with this and that. Sometimes they have like a kids' corner or like some toys or, yeah, how do you say, like some area, yeah, to play.
Q. The WTA recently announced that there will be a one-time gender test for a player. What do you think about that?
BELINDA BENCIC: I like this. I completely stand behind the decision of the WTA and the new policy, so I'm really happy that we are going to do this.
Q. I know you said leading into the tournament you were trying to fix a nagging injury. How much do you think, after Wimbledon, for top players like yourself, does it feel like a mini off-season in some ways, or not?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, I definitely think it's a really short turnaround between such a long kind of Europe swing, and then to come here fully fit and fully practiced, it's really tough.
Obviously I love this tournament a lot, so I did all I could. Even though I didn't feel like, I don't know, it went really slow the recovery, so I was a bit worried that I might not make it here. I really wanted to play here.
I think it's important to get the matches in again, but obviously it's going to be a really long hard court season. Yeah, hopefully it's going to be better.
Q. The injury, is that the tape that we saw on the leg out there, and how was that feeling after your match today?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, I think it's good. That's why I'm playing here. It's just something that's taking a long time to recover.
Obviously the tape is something that is helping me and supporting me. Today I had some issues with it, it was not staying on. But, yeah, I think it's good to play, so that's why I'm here.
Q. Have you looked ahead to who you're playing next? I don't want to spoil it.
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, yeah, I know.
Q. Are you the type of player that likes to look at the draw when you get to a tournament, or is it cliché, one match at a time for you?
BELINDA BENCIC: I don't, like, don't look, but I'm not really someone that I look, like, Oh, if I win here I'm going to play this and this.
I don't really focus on the next round. Sometimes I even don't know because I just didn't look properly, and then I ask my team.
But I have no problem with knowing who I'm playing. I just don't focus on that because before the match you are then thinking, Oh, if I win this match I could play this player, and I could win that match. It's not relevant, so...
