Elina Svitolina

Press Conference

E. SVITOLINA/A. Anisimova

6-2, 6-4

Q. Talking about closing out that match. Obviously you had a chance earlier in the first game, but getting it done, what were the keys to getting it done?

ELINA SVITOLINA: Yeah, it was not easy to close that second set. I think she came back, she was playing a bit better. It was not easy, with a little bit of wind, and the nature of the game, was not an easy one.

So, yeah, I mean, she is, of course, a hell of a player, so I was expecting her to come back a little bit more. Sometimes she's playing really sharp. So, yeah, it was not an easy one, but I'm really happy with the way I could handle the 5-4 and serve it out to close the match.

Q. You had a couple great matches lately. You had a great match against Potapova, another strong win tonight. What aspects of your game are you most pleased with this tournament thus far?

ELINA SVITOLINA: Well, I think I improved match by match. The second round was not the best performance from my side. But I'm happy that I went through that tough battle.

And now, you know, having one day off I think helped me to again find my game, work on few things, and, yeah, feeling better on the court. Also physically, you know, one day off is helping me to just be more fresh.

Q. I know you won here in 2017, in Toronto, I believe. Curious, how much do you look back on that tournament, because I was looking at the draw and it was a pretty insane draw, if you remember.

ELINA SVITOLINA: Yeah, yeah, I remember. I mean, I think it was one of the toughest draws, not taking the WTA Finals that the top players are there, but also I think I played a top-10 three or four times in that week. I think like Venus as well.

So lots of great memories, but it was a long time ago. So, of course, would be amazing if I could go deep in this tournament, but for now I'm just looking to find my game and to feel better on the court each match, and find a way to win I think is kind of, it's this kind of tournament. Because the start was not an easy match, so, yeah, just happy to be actually in the quarterfinal now.

Q. Do you feel like you're the type of player who kind of plays better later on in the tournament, it might take you a round or two before you find your best form?

ELINA SVITOLINA: No, I wouldn't say that. I think I've been, in so many years being on tour, I have different situations. I wouldn't say that I start poor. Sometimes, you know, mid tournament you have tough match. Sometimes towards the end, of course towards the end everybody is super confident, and they get there for a reason. And the semifinal, finals can be tough. But I wouldn't say that, I think it just happened here that way.
