B. SHELTON/J. Fonseca
6-3, 7-6
Q. What's your lecture on this game, how it unraveled?
JOAO FONSECA: Oh, difficult end. Didn't get my chances today.
Yeah. Be ready for the next, I'll say. And now rest and try to practice more and be ready for Cincinnati.
Q. You expected -- Shelton has a big serve -- to do well on that facet of his game. On your side how did it go? What's your appreciation of that?
JOAO FONSECA: I knew it was going to be difficult to return today. Well, I had my chances. Two early breaks in both sets, but played bad.
What can I say? I played bad and didn't play good and need some work on it.
Q. Obviously the crowd in Montreal gave you a lot of love this week. How did you react, and did this surprise you? Did you expect that reaction from the crowd?
JOAO FONSECA: I was actually surprised. I didn't know there was so many Brazilians and people that knew me besides Brazilians, which is super nice.
The support was amazing. The atmosphere on court on the three matches were super nice. So I just want to thank, and hopefully be back here in two years.
Q. Was it just the set that you played bad and he was able to break back early in those sets. Was it anything he was doing or just mistakes on your part?
JOAO FONSECA: Actually, no. It's difficult when you have a rally with Ben.
Yeah, when he was serving, I think think I returned pretty well today, but yeah, in the important points I was missing so much. I was not putting a lot of pressure on him, and the opportunities that I had serving as well was very bad on my side. So need to work on it.
Q. What happened with your ankle?
JOAO FONSECA: Nothing serious. Just something that I felt in the moment. And then after I just started not like feeling it anymore.
But it was just scary. I was just scared.
Q. What is your biggest challenge when you face Ben when he's on top?
JOAO FONSECA: His serve. That's it.
Q. Ben said that the conditions were really bad. Did you feel like the wind made you struggle a bit?
JOAO FONSECA: The wind was struggling for both of us. Not going to put why I lost because of the wind, I lost because the conditions.
No, I think I just played bad. He deserved to win. He likes playing short rallies, because long rallies for him, I mean, for us was going to be difficult because of the wind.
But, yeah, I mean he served well. I served bad. Congratulations to him.
