Steven Nelson

Press Conference

STEVEN NELSON: Felt good. Felt like we had good energy and everybody was ready to be back. It was good.

Q. Lovie was talking about Stingley and what it was like to get him out there.

STEVEN NELSON: Man, it is great. Like you saw, like we all saw, he went as healthy as we wanted him to be in OTAs but he's been adding on. Got an interception yesterday. Great stuff.

Q. What is it like, hearing from John Metchie?

STEVEN NELSON: It was nice, man, just him assuring us that he's going to be all right and that we are all going to be in this together and we are playing for him like he's praying for us to have a good season. We're with him all the way.

Q. What was it like when you heard it initially?

STEVEN NELSON: It was sad because you never expect a guy like that, a young guy, healthy guy. But you never question what God hats planned.

But I just know he's going to be all right.

Q. You kind of look right now at Derek and Jalen coming to captain so quickly -- the secondary?

STEVEN NELSON: Absolutely.

Q. How do you see your world evolving as a guy that can teach these guys and mentor them?

STEVEN NELSON: Yes, definitely. Like I said before, like just me having that experience, being able to kind of coach these guys as much as I can outside of what they are getting from our coaches, just give them different insight, you know what I mean.

Q. Can you talk about goals and expectations --

STEVEN NELSON: Went to turn the ball over. Defensively, we want to turn the ball over. Can't speak for offense. But I know defense, we want to turn the ball over as much as possible create force fumbles, picking the ball off. Whatever we can do to give the ball back to our offense.

Q. Just looking at what Lovie said about what Davis has done, what have you seen from him?

STEVEN NELSON: His poise, man. The way he carries himself throughout the day, throughout the locker room, on the field, you know, just kind of has that charisma about himself that he's going to go a long way with this team.

Q. When was it, you mentioned Derek got the interception.

STEVEN NELSON: It was earlier in practice he got an interception. I can't remember the play but I know he got an interception.

Q. Seemed like your off-season, working on the installs and Lovie feels like you're well ahead of where you were last year. How would you quantify that?

STEVEN NELSON: I wasn't here last year but I was here OTAs and I feel like the first day, everybody is hitting the pavement and running. There wasn't a lot of, I guess, corrections. Guys are hitting their strides early.

Q. How would you describe the coaching style and demands he puts on you and specifically the expectations on the defense?

STEVEN NELSON: I love it. It's real tough and demanding and he expects the best out of his players, as we should. As players, we have to own it and step up to it for us to collectively play well.

Q. Is there a cross over --

STEVEN NELSON: I was there with him.

Q. What areas have you seen --

STEVEN NELSON: Brandon's always been good. Like I've seen him for years and years. You know, it's funny because like even in college, he kind of carried himself like as a professional already. He just has more experience as he grows. He's always going to have that veteran savvy tons to tweak his game a little bit.

Q. No secret it's hot. How are you dealing with that?

STEVEN NELSON: You say hot? I'm from Georgia, man, so I'm good. It's perfect for me.

Q. Steven, it's only been a couple of weeks but since OTAs, have you noticed anything different especially on the defensive side of the ball?

STEVEN NELSON: Yeah, attention to detail, that's the biggest thing. Energy is always there. Guys just working for one goal, that's to win a championship, and it starts right here.

Q. Have you flipped --

STEVEN NELSON: If you do your research on me, I played everywhere. I played, inside, outside, I played best receivers, always. As far as me, I got it. It's limitless for me. But Stingley got his potential is through the roof. Just got to do the research a little bit.

Q. You guys in the secondary, do you have a bet to get a touchdown this year?

STEVEN NELSON: We ain't got that far but we always just want to come out here and compete. We always want to do better than we did the day before. That's always just the goal. Get a couple turnovers this day, next day we want to double that. That's how we steadily increase.
