Texans 17, 49ers 0
Q. What do you make of what you saw out there today?
KYLE SHANAHAN: It was pretty rough. Didn't play clean at all. I think we struggled to stop the run on that first drive, which was tough.
When we did play good defense, had a couple bad penalties, kept them on the field. Offensively just way too much penalties. I think offense especially but it was also defense and special teams.
And then I just thought we struggled to execute. So I thought it was pretty sloppy play, and wish it could have been cleaner.
Q. (Regarding any concerns 17 days out with offensive line.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: Well, yeah, it's been sporadic each week, so hopefully we'll get Trent back, McGlinchey back. We've been mixing these young guys in there, so it's been good for them to get a lot of reps of. You always want more, but we got 17 days to week one, so hopefully get some guys back. If you don't, got keep working on the continuity throughout the year.
Q. (Regarding Brendel, Banks.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: I'm not sure yet. We got 17 days and we definitely aren't going to assign that stuff tonight. We got a lot more practice today.
Q. Does Trent Williams have an injury?
KYLE SHANAHAN: No, we just sat him. Yeah.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: That's true, but it's better when he's out there.
Q. What did you make of your running game? I know that's connected to your offensive line.
KYLE SHANAHAN: I didn't make very much good out of anything today, so -point probably be the same answer to everything. Just inconsistent when he did get something going, and there was a few that squeezed through there, and then you're in for some 20 or second and 20 from a holding call.
I thought we struggled to get the rhythm going and it was just a rough day.
Q. What did you make of Trey Lance's performance?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, I wish it was cleaner just from a whole, but I'm not going to make too much of it. We want him to get just two drives. I ended up giving him three because I wanted to give him a little bit more there, but there weren't too many opportunities and we got into some long down distances which made it tough.
Q. How do you feel about your running backs? Looks like you have six pretty good guys there. What goes into that final decision?
KYLE SHANAHAN: It's tough. I feel like it's been tough every year here. I think we've always had some good practice squad guys, I mean, some good undrafted free agents. We've have always I feel like brought in some good vets for competition, and every year it's tough to decide on the backs.
We've also gone through four every single year since our first year. It's always an important decision, not just about the backs either. It's how they line up with all the other positions. So we'll decide over the next few days.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, of course. I mean, every team, just like we'll look at every other team's roster. That's what this time is about and that's why people are always listen to what you guys report on our practices and all those things, so everyone can see like what guys to take. That's why this is a very tough time for people.
That's why we don't like answering many questions. (Smiling.)
Q. (Regarding Womack.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, he's done a good job at nickel. Got some more reps on the sounds. Just having him and D-Mo do both, so get some good film here to show them there, but I thought it was a going to play. He doesn't quit on the slot-go I think it was. Kept battling to get there and end up tipping it and costing a pick for T-Moore, so that was a hell of a play.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, I thought he did a real good job last week. I thought that was one of his better preseason games he's had. Seem like he did a decent job today. I'll have to see on the plane on the way home, but he's giving himself a chance there.
Q. And with the backup quarterbacks, what were you looking to see from them?
KYLE SHANAHAN: Just to get them more playing time. Both of them I think need it, just the reps. The more the better. I was trying -- had such mixed emotions there at the end trying to end the game so we didn't get anybody hurt and also wanted to give Brock another two-minute drill, which though he did a pretty good job getting us down there and giving us a chance to score.
Both these guys were in some tough situations. That D-line I thought played pretty hard. I don't want to take anything away from them. We struggled with some of the penalties and the situations we got in.
But thought both the quarterbacks battled. Wish they would've been smarter with the ball on a couple of those.
Q. Has Brock surprised you?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, we liked him a lot coming in and he's done a good job. We just have had him in OTAs, in practice for a while, so hasn't been much surprise to us.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: I'm nervous watching everyone on those drives, not just the quarterback. Those guys usually get the most protection.
But, I mean, I don't want to eat my own words, so I'm just glad we made it out of it. It's a fine line for everything. That's why preseason is important, but also something that compared to the driving range, whatever happens there doesn't really matter. But you need to do it to get better, too.
So you're always a little bit nervous, but we got through it and I think that will help them in the long run.
Q. (Regarding Jimmy.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, we've kind of known that for a little bit, that it was most likely going to be like that. So that's why you saw us bring Gibson in. Looked like he did some good things today. That will be fun to watch the film.
We have guys that have played there before with Huffkin last year, T-Moore the year before, and Odum has done a good job bringing him in.
So the guys that have gotten opportunities I think give us some depth. And Dontae has done a good job for us there over the years where we needed him. You know, you never want to lose someone like Jimmie Ward. It is a big deal, but I think we got the guys to weather the storm.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: Yes, yeah.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, I thought so. I mean, he got a stinger there a little bit in pre-game warmup, so that took him a while to get in the game for that to wear off. But I was glad that he got back out there. I thought he played well and improved in the last two games.
Q. You have to carry Jimmy on your initial 53, right?
KYLE SHANAHAN: Sorry, just lots of Jimmys on our team. Yes. Yeah, we do. All guys you have to carry eventually.
Q. (No microphone.)
KYLE SHANAHAN: I think he's healthy, so...
He won't be on IR.
