Sean McDermott

Visitors Postgame Presser

Miami - 21, Buffalo - 19

Q. How much did the heat start affecting your team as the game went on?

SEAN McDERMOTT: Just a little bit here and there. A couple guys here and there.

Q. Sean, obviously you coach a lot, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a team decimated as much as your team was. You lost like 13 guys when it was all said and done. Have you ever been a part of something like that?

SEAN McDERMOTT: I thought our training staff did a great job. Guys were going down, some heat related, some with other injury related there.

Just really proud of the guys. I know we didn't get the result we were looking for.

Q. You nearly won the game with all the obstacles?

SEAN McDERMOTT: I respect what you're saying. We came down here to win the game. I didn't get it done. I'm proud of the way the guys battled, the effort they gave. We used about everybody we could on the sideline there. Hopefully we can get some of those guys back and healthy.

Q. How do you see that play on the offensive line in particular, the center, for example?

SEAN McDERMOTT: I appreciate the way Van went in there and battled. He went until the very end. I mean, he was hurting, and you saw it all game. It wasn't just at the end when he finally went down. I thought he really battled, and then Greg came in and did the same.

Came down to the margins there. We didn't do enough at the end of the day, and we didn't capitalize on some opportunities that we had for points. Give credit to them. They won the game.

Q. (No microphone)?

SEAN McDERMOTT: I just think execution overall. We had the situation before the half there. We were trying to kill the clock and take it down to about four seconds there, which is what we normally do to kick the field goal and get points before the end of the half there.

We didn't execute, and we got the ball down inside the 1 yard line again and didn't execute there. So just things we can learn and grow from.

Q. (No microphone)?

SEAN McDERMOTT: I'd rather not get into that. He didn't play. I'm real proud of the guys that went out there and did. I thought Jordan was a great influence for us on the sideline for us with his energy, the thing he could control today.

Q. What do you think of the performances today?

SEAN McDERMOTT: I told them today in the locker room after the game, I said, I didn't even bring them up because they couldn't move. That was a heck of an effort. Never want to come up short. There's no ribbons for second place, and they know it. They know it.

So we go back, we learn from this, and I think we did -- I think we'll learn things that were really good about today. One of those is the guts and heart and the intangibles of our football team, and I think we'll learn some things that weren't very good today, which led to the result we got.

When you look at the difference in the game, I think we had almost 500 yards to their 212 or 221 roughly. You should win those games. We just didn't take care of the ball enough and come away with some take-aways.

Again, I like the way we fought in all three phases till the end, and we've got to learn from it.

Q. Comment on effort of your backs, especially early on in the game, Singletary in particular, kind of allowing you guys to move the sticks when the receivers weren't getting much in terms of separation downfield and opportunities like that.

SEAN McDERMOTT: I thought Josh did a good job going to his checkdown early. That frustrates defensive play callers when you do that, second and two, that's a hard call for a defensive coordinator.

I thought Josh and the back did a good job getting on the same page early. They were doing some things blitz-wise, which we expected, and some dropout as well. I thought they handled it at times fairly well, but other times we can grow from it.

Q. What went into the decision on the field goal at the end of the game to go for it. It was fourth and four or something like that. To go for the kick instead of go for it on fourth down?

SEAN McDERMOTT: It was a good situation to get points there. We've got a lot of faith in Tyler and our field goal unit.

Q. When you've got a minute and a half, whatever it was, plenty of time. Are you thinking that we were about to see some kind of a miracle and that was going to be an unbelievable rally. Were you thinking that?

SEAN McDERMOTT: We were just in the moment. As a competitor, you're just in the moment. As players are, as coaches, we're the same. We're trying to get our team in a position to execute, which I thought we were, except we had that sack at the end around the 40, 40-plus yard line, just over the 40 yard line there maybe, if memory serves me correctly, and we got that sack.

We were right where we needed to be with another play or two in there, and we practice that all the time. A lot of faith and confidence to come out and kick the game winner.

They made a play, and so we move on and learn from it.

Q. Are you talking about the penalty?

SEAN McDERMOTT: The penalty, yeah. It turned out to be a big play in the game there.

Q. (Indiscernible) the runner at the goal line. On the first play, the Dolphins want to push through too to the goal line?

SEAN McDERMOTT: We talked about some of it. We talked about a lot of things in there. We're inside the 1. Don't want to give away strategy right now, respectfully,, but we'll look back at that, and that will an opportunity that was missed for sure.

Q. What was Micah like on the sidelines?

SEAN McDERMOTT: The same. He was great. Great influence. Great energy on the sideline. Jordan and Micah both, their leadership for those young guys out there playing.

Q. Any update on (indiscernible). On special teams he was out there but not on defense?

JOSH ALLEN: No update for you. I'll know more tomorrow on most of these guys for you.

Q. Everything okay with Josh?

JOSH ALLEN: Yes, he's good.

Q. Is that a situation where today you look at how competitive some of the guys are put into positions but you combine the injury list at the start of the game, the heat, the factor. Does that all just prove too difficult to overcome with that number of guys?

SEAN McDERMOTT: Never. That's not too difficult. Got a lot of confidence in the guys in this room, a lot of confidence. It's never too difficult. Got a lot of confidence in these guys. Thanks.
