Dolphins 29 - 49ers 17
KYLE SHANAHAN: Injuries from the game, Greenlaw right calf, never returned. Leonard Floyd, shoulder. Did return. Jaylon Moore quad, did not return. Aaron Banks knee, did not return. Dee Winters chest, did not return.
Go ahead.
Q. They moved things up pretty quickly. Does that denote the seriousness of that?
KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, they thought it was most likely an MCL.
Q. What can you tell us about Dre's situation? Is that a reason for concern, the calf?
KYLE SHANAHAN: It can be. It was the fourth play or one of the first four plays. I know it was the first drive. He felt tightness in the calf. Once that happened we shut him down. See if he pulled it or anything.
Q. Tendinitis in that leg last year. Is there a connection between the two things?
KYLE SHANAHAN: The Achilles tendinitis last year to the calf today?
Q. Yes.
KYLE SHANAHAN: I have no idea.
Q. You were officially eliminated from the Playoffs before kickoff. Were you aware of that? What kind of pall did that cast over the game?
KYLE SHANAHAN: No, I wasn't aware of that. That did nothing with the game. We kind of had that vibe last week. It wasn't official. We kind of understand numbers. So we knew that last week.
Q. At what point did you learn that?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, I knew it was pretty much last week. I mean, they told me after the game here it was official with those two games.
I mean, we understand what 1% chance is or whatever it was pretty much last week.
Q. The penalties, what did you tell your guys after the game?
KYLE SHANAHAN: No matter what's going on, when you have those penalties like that, you don't deserve to win. The offense, the biggest thing was the lack of concentration.
First-and-goal at the two, no problem. Three plays before that, we have two guys line up on the ball. Then we overcame it with Deebo's play there on third-and-eight. We had two guys off the ball. I mean, that was a big one. Then to miss the field goal after that...
The defense, three drives where you have a personal foul on all three of those drives. I think two of them ended up in points.
But it was stuff that we can control. I didn't get to see 'em all. You can't have three personal fouls on three drives in the second half and expect to win.
Q. As a coach, how does that make you feel that they keep happening?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, I'm not going to say that they keep happening when it comes to penalties. Some weeks are worse than others. Today was as bad as it gets. I know we are in the front half of the league when it comes to penalties. But today, the situations when we got those penalties, how we got them, that was real disappointing.
Q. Did you see the second Pearsall illegal formation penalty before it happened?
KYLE SHANAHAN: No, I didn't. The one on the quick count. One guy on, one guy off.
Q. Purdy's interception?
KYLE SHANAHAN: It looked like he was going to try to layer the ball over whoever the nickel was. As he was throwing it, he got hit. He wasn't able to.
Q. With Drake, could he have gone back in if you needed him?
KYLE SHANAHAN: We didn't even discuss it. Once we heard about his calf, we shut him down.
Q. Is it hard given the injury situations to judge Brock and his performance or do you say he has to overcome a lot of this stuff?
KYLE SHANAHAN: You look at each play. That's why you watch film. You don't try to just have a sentence to define the whole game. Get on that plane and watch a lot of the film. Yeah, it makes it tougher for those situations.
Just as a team, regardless of those situations, those penalties, I discuss. I don't want to get into the situations with injuries. We had every opportunity to win that game. But you don't give yourself an opportunity when you make some of those mistakes.
Q. You mentioned earlier things you can control. As many injuries as you've had this season, a few times after games you talk about that. How much of a source of frustration is that, that some of this isn't the opponent, it's stuff you can control?
KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, that's my big frustration. I understand when your backs are against the wall, you have an uphill battle. When you got first-and-goal at the two, you make it third-and-goal at the 18, whatever that is, you miss a kick. Completely something you've done on your own. That's very frustrating. Makes it that much harder.
Q. George and Deebo seemed to be having some vintage performances out there. What does that say about them?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, it's how I expect them to play every week. Those guys are good players. Circumstances, don't change anything. When you get an opportunity to make a play, I expect guys to do it. I expect those guys to do it as much as anyone in this league.
Q. You had backups in at left tackle and guard. Does that restrict the plays that you call?
KYLE SHANAHAN: You got to think about all that stuff. Everything goes into it. You also got to look at what the score is, the time on the clock, down and distance, what they're playing.
But everything goes into what you decide on a play call.
Q. The penalties, they can't happen, but how much of that do you think is frustration boiling over on your part?
KYLE SHANAHAN: None.
Q. What was your confidence level in Jake Moody right now?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, it wasn't good out there missing that kick. I don't know exactly what happened on the snap and the hold. But that's one he's got to make.
Q. How much time did Burford get at tackle?
KYLE SHANAHAN: All year. He's been our third all year, so...
Q. How did you do defending Tua?
KYLE SHANAHAN: Tua, I mean, he leads the league in completions. That's what he's great at. He does a good job after that.
Our goal was to play more the pass. We knew we give up some in the run game. Try to get him to third down. That's what's so frustrating about the three penalties, thought we would get to third down on one of them.
Give them freebies, too many. Tua is going to make some good throws. Thought he made some big ones today. That wasn't the reason we lost. It was an accumulation of things.
Q. Opening drive penalty, did you consider challenging that?
KYLE SHANAHAN: I didn't get a good angle. They said upstairs they didn't think we'd win, so... It was tough to get.
Q. This is the first time you've been in this stadium since the Super Bowl. Did that enter your mind at all?
KYLE SHANAHAN: It did a little bit when I got into my coach's locker room. Nothing with the game or anything.
