Jordyn Brooks

Postgame Presser

Chargers 29, Dolphins 27

Q. What was your vantage point on the late play where first it looked like Jaelan Phillips had Justin Herbert wrapped up, and then obviously Dante Trader a shot at Ladd McConkey before he made the catch and run?

JORDYN BROOKS: I was covering back on that play. My back was kind of turned to the play, but it just looks like we might have missed the tackle or whatever. I didn't see what happened, how he got open.

But, yeah, just we got to make the tackle, get off the field.

Q. Jordyn, as a leader of this team, one of the leaders, how do you try to -- I know a lot of things you said -- but how do you try to avoid this continuing to spin out of control as you guys sit 1-5 and these losses mount?

JORDYN BROOKS: Yeah, I mean, just got to go back to work. It's just things that happen over the course of a game, this play here, this play there. Can't control everything. As a leader I got to start with me first, make sure I'm doing my job and doing it to the best of my ability, keeping the spirits positive, keeping everybody's morale up.

It's hard to do that when you're 1-5 and you expected to be 5-1, you know what I mean? So that's the challenge for anybody.

It's something that I embrace, and so we show up next week the same person and try to get this thing turned around.

Q. Tua was in here saying you shared a Bible verse with the team. Can you kind of just take us through why you chose it and what you felt that the impact was?

JORDYN BROOKS: Yeah. Just sharing with them the Bible says that a brother is born in adversity. Losing in this league, it's adversity because it affects your life. It's not like losing in high school and Little League where there is no pressure.

This affects our livelihood. You lose, you get cut, traded, fired, all these things. So I called it adversity for that reason. I think now is a chance to be a brother to my teammates, and that's what I was sharing with them. This is where a brother is born, when stuff is hard. It's easy to be a brother when everything is good.

That's the verse that I shared with them.

Q. You guys were pretty solid in the red zone. I think 33% touchdown conversion rate. What led to the success in the red zone?

JORDYN BROOKS: Offensive-wise?

Q. No, defense, like you guys only allowed two touchdowns in the red zone.

JORDYN BROOKS: Yeah, I think we were -- I don't know honestly. I got to watch the film. I think we did a lot better just holding them to three points when we could and improving in the red zone. That's something that we were really good last year; emphasized a lot in the offseason; just hadn't got it rolling this year.

So I think this game was pretty good for us red zone-wise; just lining up getting communicated, and tackling well.

Q. Stopping the run, this time it was Kimani Vidal for them. What was making him tough to go against today?

JORDYN BROOKS: Nothing. Honestly, it continues to be ourselves at the wrong times and the wrong moments. I thought early in the game we did well. Just a play here, play there. And so like I said, I got to go back and watch the film, but that's what I take from it.

Q. Tua said there are players late to player-led meetings or not showing up to meetings. As one of the leaders on this team are you seeing that as well? Is it something that needs to be mandatory for you guys? What's going on with those meetings?

JORDYN BROOKS: Nothing. I don't have a comment on that honestly.

Q. Jordyn, talk about when you're on the field you have your responsibilities. As a captain you're kind of for the whole defense. Something goes wrong for a player but you're taking care of your own responsibilities, how do you balance that especially with the other players doing their jobs and then it's obviously all 11, but that one piece just isn't ticking.

JORDYN BROOKS: Yeah, just you got to stay positive. I mean, the worst thing you can do is start yelling and pointing fingers at people. We going to get enough of that outside of here.

So got to be positive and make a correction where you can make one. So that's the way I approach it. If somebody makes a mistake, if I make a mistake, try to be positive about it but urgent at the same time.
