Seahawks, 34 - Cardinals, 37
PETE CARROLL: Really disappointing night here with so many things that happened, so much that happened in this game. We had all kinds of chances to win the football game, and could have won it on offense couple times and defense a couple times and in overtime as well.
We weren't able to get the finish that we needed to. We been finding that way on one side of the ball or the other to make the play, make the sequence happen, and we had our shots. We take such pride in finishing well and doing things right down the stretch and executing and making the other team have to out-execute us.
It didn't feel like that tonight. It didn't feel like we were able to force that issue in our favor.
So it's hard to win them all. We are going to keep trying. Tough to lose a division game, but they played their tails off tonight, and you can see why they're a good team and hard to deal with.
We had some phenomenal things happen in this game. Tyler Lockett's game was just crazy. He just did so many terrific things, so many special plays. Again, he's just a great football player and he showed it again.
Russell's numbers are huge with throwing and rushing all of that, and the three picks get you. We're minus one for the game. That's how it goes. Minus one it's really hard to win.
None of those had to happen. So I know he's really disappointed about that for sure. So tough night for us in the desert. Had a lot of success down here and looked like we were going to have it again. Looked like we won the game in OT and we get a penalty to take that away.
That's how close these games are. They are all over the league and this is what we're up against. It's going to be like this week in and week out. We are versed. We just got to find a way to come through and make the plays like we know how to do.
Okay. Go ahead.
Q. Just defensively you guys looked like you made progress in the previous two games. How do you feel like that went for you tonight?
PETE CARROLL: Obviously not good. They scored 37 points. Not good enough. I don't know any of the numbers on third down or any of that, but couldn't have been any good. Quarterback was able to make plays when we did have them, just like he's been doing. That's why he's special.
But we just have to find a way to get our stops and get off the field and give the ball back to our offense. Offense had almost 600 yards. We they need to get them the football more times.
So it's not good enough.
Q. Speaking to that, you guys had no sacks today. Had a hard time getting to Kyler. What can you say about the pass rush and how concerning that is for you?
PETE CARROLL: Yeah, we had our hands on him a few times and weren't able to get him down. He's been sacked nine times coming into our game I think, and that's because he's really hard to get. We were unable to do it. Huge play opportunities if you get him there, knock him out of bounds, or chase him down, he's really special avoiding.
I don't know that has -- we did a lot of dropping tonight as they spread out and tried to cover him down, so we didn't rush a lot of guys at him. But it always needs to be better. We need to keep working at it and making sure that we're making ourselves available to disrupt some plays. That's what didn't happen.
Q. Late in the game Arizona's blitz was getting to Russ, especially in the overtime. Looked like he took a pretty hard hit in overtime. Was he affected by that blow and would that affect the last interception?
PETE CARROLL: No. He was fortunate that he wasn't because you did get whacked pretty good. We were trying to take advantage of it and we didn't do as well as we would like to have as they were coming. We like to make them pay when we do that, and weren't able to get that done enough.
I don't know, Russ threw for a ton of yards tonight and all that, but there was more out there. We knew they were coming and we were kind of welcoming it to take advantage and hit the plays, but weren't able to get it done enough.
Q. You mentioned the interceptions didn't have to happen. Can you describe what did happen or why it didn't have to happen?
PETE CARROLL: Yeah, I think just -- I can't remember the first one clearly, but Russ threw the ball up and laid one over the type top and didn't get it done. He had the guy in the corner of the end zone and he laid the ball up and Baker made a great play on him.
In practice we been throwing that ball kind of kind of like that, and I don't know how he saw the play coming and developing as he did, but Russ thought he had him.
And then the last one he laid up over the top and tried drop that in on him. He didn't have to throw that one. So but that's going to happen. I don't know how many times we threw tonight, but we just made some errors.
50? Yeah, so stuff like that.
Q. How is Chris Carson and Shaquill Griffin?
PETE CARROLL: Chris has a mid-foot sprain. We don't know until we get an MRI what that means or the extent.
Who else did you ask about?
Q. Shaquill Griffin.
PETE CARROLL: Yeah, he had a concussion enough to keep him out the game. He was pretty clear afterwards so just have to go through the protocol and see how he does.
Q. Pete, what did you see there ultimately defensively late as you were trying to get them stopped? I think they started to go to the run game a little bit there late with Edmonds and getting you go a little bit there. What did you see as you guys were trying to wrap that up?
PETE CARROLL: Played a lot of the four wides in this game late in the game as we had guys banged up. It was taxing to us. They ran the ball because of the field position and the clock and the field goals that they were playing for.
They were able to do that and did a better job than we should have let them. But they did a nice job and handled the clock well and you saw they got down to two seconds and killed the clock just right for their opportunity to win.
So I thought they did an impressive job. They kind of ran it by situations. They didn't run the ball really well throughout the game, but at the end they did. We're spread out and they did a nice job of mixing and using the QB a little bit, draws a little bit, and all that.
Q. Curious if something happened to Travis Homer and that's why he wasn't this there. Were the blitzes that they showed you in overtime one you hadn't seen previously in the game?
PETE CARROLL: First off Homer has a knee contusion. We don't what the extent of that is right now. It will checked out next couple days.
These guys have blitzed a lot over time, and they've thrown everything. This was just a variety of things they always do. They have a big blitz package, and if they get you where you're not able to take advantage of it, they keep it coming. That's kind of what happened tonight.
We didn't do poorly against it all the time. There was some stuff that we did that was good, but late down the stretch we needed to win a couple and didn't quite get it done.
Q. The play by Metcalf to save the touchdown, what did you think of that?
PETE CARROLL: Yeah, it was one of the best football plays I've ever seen. It was just remarkable. You saw him realize what was happening, the opportunity, and he just used all that marvelous skill he had and the will to go run the guy down.
It was such an incredible play because of what happened afterwards. The defense followed and rallied and got out of there on four downs and took the ball off him. Offense was 96 yards with the drive. I just think that it was an inspiring play. Nobody could miss it. Everybody that was watching that play, whether you liked football or not, you could see that was something extraordinary.
I just never seen one quite like that. And the follow up, because of the inspirational moment, was extraordinary well done, and so really a great play for all time.
Q. The penalty on the field goal, did you get the explanation that you needed on that one?
PETE CARROLL: Yeah, he jumped trying to time it up, but -- I'm not sure of this, but I think Bobby got his hands on the top of one of the linemen and they called a leverage, where you're using your hands to springboard over the top. I'm not sure but that's what I think happened. They assessed that penalty, not the five yard penalty.
Q. You touched on Tyler Lockett, the night he had. They took out Metcalf, but he was able to have a monster game for you guys.
PETE CARROLL: Yeah, he did everything. He did everything. Ran great routes, he got open, he scrambled to get open. He caught and ran the football. He was just available to Russ all night long.
The great touchdown catch is we've seen him do. We figure that had because Tyler did it he was in bounds, and before we could see the replay that he would have figure that had out, and he did.
I guess. I still haven't seen the play clearly. I know what he was doing. He was dragging his toes and just made an extraordinary catch. It's one thing to match a catch like that some time in your life, but to do it every time you got a chance is pretty crazy, and particularly under pressure in the stress of the game and the situation and all that. He's a phenomenal, phenomenal football player.
Q. The penalty on David Moore on the touchdown to DK, did you see what happened there?
PETE CARROLL: No. I just know what David thought, and he thought that -- he locked him up, and as he started to spin he thought he released him. That's all I know. I didn't see the replay. I just asked him. That was a remarkable play, a remarkable touchdown play there too with DK going up the sidelines. We could have walked off on that one.
Q. On your last possession of regulation you got a first down, and then you stalled at mid-field and punted. Was there much thought at 4th and 2 to go for it?
PETE CARROLL: Not right there, no.
Q. Just thoughts on how Carlos Hyde played with Chris being out?
PETE CARROLL: I thought he hit it really well. We ran the ball well tonight. Everybody was effective running the football, Russ included.
I thought Carlos really stepped into the role and did a nice job in the big touchdown run, another toss on our bench side. Really, really nice hard ball running.
He is a good football player. I'm glad we have him.
