Shane Waldron

Weekday Press Conference

Q. What was the key to sort of being able to -- the quick passing game, Geno got the ball out a lot faster. Just a matter of wanting to do it, emphasizing it? What was the key?

SHANE WALDRON: Yeah, I think Geno did a great job this past week of playing in the timing and rhythm of some of those plays there, knowing where the quick elements were.

But like everything, it's always going to take all 11 on all those snaps. I thought the receivers did a great job in some of those man coverage situations of winning quick. DK's first play when they're playing the four push, and he wins versus that one-on-one with some tough leverage.

Those are great examples of guys making plays. Great individual efforts, hitting that connection and Geno being on time with a great accurate throw.

Q. What did you like most about the way the offense moved the ball in Dallas?

SHANE WALDRON: I thought just coming back each series, coming to the sidelines, seeing what was going on, going right back out to the next series and executing on the next series no matter what took place, and then just taking in the information and then going and doing it again, doing it again.

We had some good situational things that came up throughout the game, especially that end of half scenario that came up where you had kind of multiple kind of strange things happen near that goal line area there, and guys did a good job of just keep playing the next play, learn from the past, keep playing the next play.

And then it played out, and unfortunately not enough at the end of the game there, but throughout the course of the game I thought it was a good step forward.

Q. 9 for 14 on 3rd down, I think 9 of your first 11. What was going on there?

SHANE WALDRON: Well, the 3rd down, starting with the protection, I thought the guys did a good job up front against another dynamic defensive front right there, and then going back to the timing and rhythm of the pass game where Geno is getting the ball out in some of those quick rhythm throws and the receivers winning on time, I thought all those things came together in a nice way, especially those early 3rd downs in the game.

Q. What was your view of what went wrong on the final play?

SHANE WALDRON: Yeah, it was unfortunate. Went for it right there with the little scat protection trying to sneak DJ out the backside of the front right there, so we're in a squeeze right there, so obviously the ends, the free rusher in that scenario, and they had a good defensive call with the AA gap look right there, so we weren't in something we've hit in the past and it didn't work out there.

I know obviously want to have that one back there and give us a better chance there, but they had a good defensive ball and it didn't work out there.

Q. That's something you call no matter who that end is, right?

SHANE WALDRON: Yeah, the end's lined up and Parsons lined up as the 3 technique, the nose, the end. So those guys did a good job of following their rules. It's something that happens anytime you're in a five-man protection, you're going to be susceptible to have to squeeze the A-gap right there like we did, and like I said, unfortunately didn't work out, and hope to do better next time in that scenario.

Q. When you're playing a team like (indiscernible) defense, what's the balance between being aggressive and being patient?

SHANE WALDRON: You hit it right there. It's just having that aggressive mindset but having the patience within the game to let the game come to you. Not being overly aggressive in situations where it doesn't call for it.

If the look doesn't play out, the exact way to present the deep shot, taking the check-down, finding completions, staying patient on first and second down, something we know coming out of the first game against those guys this year that we can improve upon and do a better job of.
