Clint Hurtt

Weekday Press Conference

CLINT HURTT: I'm going to have to apologize ahead of time. I kind of came down with a little cold. If you have a hard time hearing me, I apologize.

Q. How encouraging is what you guys were able to do against an explosive player to prevent explosive plays this past game compared to what you saw the week before?

CLINT HURTT: Very encouraging. Obviously I spoke to that as something we wanted to do is eliminate explosives. Sometimes to get those things done, there's certain things you have to give up from time to time.

I knew going into it that maybe kind of be a little bit more spacey underneath and a lighter box in some of the run game stuff in order to eliminate the big plays to get that done.

The guys did a nice job of owning the game plan and getting that accomplished.

Q. From an execution standpoint, how did they do that, though?

CLINT HURTT: Guys staying on top. Schematically do some things where we could be aggressive on the perimeter screens and the quick throws with the RPO game, which we know is a staple of what they do. And obviously having the ability to stay on top of the big throws to DeVonta Smith and also with A.J. Brown.

So we wanted to do that schematically coverage-wise, play some corners and things like that, and some safeties, some coverages that we could roll to 11. Those guys did a great job of owning it. Obviously it was going to make it hard on us to take care of some of the things in the run game.

But the whole thing is you're going to say, okay, they're going to do that and we'll give up some stuff, but when they want to take their shots deep down the field, we've got to be able to capitalize because we're maximizing coverage where we can take care of the ball when it happens.

Obviously on Julien's two plays, we were able to do that.

Q. Speaking of Julien, the four turnovers the last two weeks obviously stand out to him, but beyond that, what do you like about how he's playing right now?

CLINT HURTT: He really came into his own. A lot of early on in the year is him was him getting comfortable with everything, and obviously you can see he's at that point now. It's no longer making sure he's on the same page with his teammates. Now he knows what's going on, so he can go and let the game come to him.

When his opportunity is there to make plays, he can go and take care of that. It's been awesome to see, and I think he's going to continue to ascend the rest of the year.

Q. With their scheme and with Hurts, was pass rush something that you -- maybe the sack number weren't there, but containment was more important?

CLINT HURTT: Containment was way more important. The thing is there's so many throws with him where the ball is going to come out fast. A lot of his throws in the passing game were RPO throws and quick screens, things of that nature. You're not going to get sacks on those kind of plays.

Generally where you're going to get sacks on him is going to be third down and two-minute. Because of his ability to extend plays and push the ball down the field or him as a runner, it was more important to confine and keep him in the pocket as opposed to just go crazy and cut it loose, and now you've got bad space and bad things happen.

So that was more important for us to get that done, and I thought the guys up until the last 20-yard scramble he had in the two-minute drive, they had done a good job of it all night long. Obviously you want to go get sacks, but it's about doing what you need to do to beat the opponent and the challenges they present to you.

Q. How much did you highlight to your team Leonard Williams' play on the third down, I think it was the next to last drive, that he ran and made Hurts --

CLINT HURTT: Absolutely. That was the whole thing coming into it. There was a lot of plays that Big Cat made in that game that were outstanding -- being on top of the screens, whipping some blocks one-on-one in the run game and making some plays. And obviously the effort on that third down, finishing for us and making him throw the ball out of bounds.

That was an excellent play by him. You have to have those kinds of plays to continue to win big games.

Q. You talk about being lighter in the box last week and you've got a guy like Derrick Henry this week, I would imagine you have to shift some priorities and focuses.

CLINT HURTT: You've always got to adapt to what style of offense you're playing in your opponent and obviously things that fit your style of players too, not always make it so much about the opponent.

Yeah, it's a different style of offense. This is a team that wants to run the football. They want to pound you, get multiple tight ends in the game. They do a good job of presenting some different challenges to you. And I'm assuming it will be a veteran quarterback that we'll be playing against.

Q. If Jamal Adams can't play, your thoughts?

CLINT HURTT: Devin Bush has played in that kind of big nickel spot for us. He's a guy, even when, whether Jamal is up and ready to go or not, we always keep Devin available to us so he's locked and loaded for that. He'll be another option for us to have ready.

Q. What does Mike Jackson's physicality bring when you have a guy outside? You mentioned the Eagles' quick passing game, and he was kind of wrecking some of those. What does he bring?

CLINT HURTT: Like I said, he's a big physical corner. Whether it's a tight end outside trying to block more or a physical receiver, I'll take that matchup all day. Mike is a physical player by nature. He plays to his body style and temperament. So he did a heck of a job out there.

And he understands himself. He does a good job of staying on top of routes and challenging guys at the top of the catch. He played a heck of a game.
