New England Patriots 22, Washington Football Team 13
BILL BELICHICK: The transition from training camp to start to get ready to prepare for games and play games, deal with the postgame, starting all over again and getting ready for a new team next week in Philadelphia. Good opportunity for our team to go out there and compete tonight. I thought we did some good things. We'll look at the film. I'm sure there was a lot to correct. There was a lot to correct. Some of the things we didn't do as well.
But fundamentally I thought we made some progress. But again, we've still got a long way to go, a lot of things we need to tighten up and improve on. I thought the players competed well, and it was good to see some things come together that we've been working on.
Ready to put this one behind us tomorrow and move on to Philadelphia. Got a lot of work to do. We've just got to keep grinding through it here. It's training camp.
Q. Bill, kneeling it twice and then running for 91 yards on 3rd down; is that how you draw it up, running out the game at this point?
BILL BELICHICK: We kneeled once and then when they used their time-outs we had to run plays. Yeah, sometimes that happens in that four-minute offense. You split one, get a big play out of it.
Q. Were you surprised Washington took a time-out there or were you just trying to run out the game? How did you expect that to go?
BILL BELICHICK: Well, you don't expect anything. They make their decisions and we make ours.
Q. What were your thoughts on the way Mac led the offense?
BILL BELICHICK: Yeah, we'll look at it on film and see. There were some good things. There's plenty of things we can improve on. It's true for everybody. It's true for all of us.
Q. Bill, Ja'Whaun seemed to be taking the last two practices into today's game. He was one that showed really good burst defensively. How did he look out there to you today for you?
BILL BELICHICK: I mean, made a nice play on the tip ball and ran it made, made a couple nice tackles out there. We'll take a look at it and go through the film and all. But I thought our secondary competed well. We didn't have a lot of players back there. We were in a lot of four defensive backs the majority of the game, but those guys all responded, showed a good level of conditioning.
We lost Myles there in the fourth quarter, so we finished with four DBs, but yeah, Ja'Whaun played some corner, played some safety. It's good experience for the guys that played. At positions where we were a little shorthanded, it gave an opportunity for those guys to play more, so hopefully they took advantage of it.
Q. What drove the decision to go no-huddle with Mac in what looked like the same group of players around him to start the second half?
BILL BELICHICK: We would have gone two-minute at the end of the second quarter but we didn't have one, so we just went two-minute at the start of the third quarter.
Q. What do you think of Quinn Nordin's performance today?
BILL BELICHICK: Yeah, I mean, we'll take a look at it. Hit a couple good ones, missed an extra point. It's all about consistency. Quinn has gotten better. He's worked hard. But again, it's really about consistency at that position. We're getting there. We'll see what kind of progress he continues to make.
Q. Not that in preseason you're thinking challenge flags, but how much consideration did you have on the Jakobi play that looked like it was close or if that's not really what you're thinking about preseason?
BILL BELICHICK: Yeah, didn't feel like challenging it.
