Toronto FC 2, Inter Miami 0
Q. First win, first goal, how does it feel?
JONATHAN OSORIO: Feels great. Feels great. What matters is the three points honestly. Obviously with the three games, to begin the season, we were a little bit disappointed, and having leads in all those three games and losing it, so yeah, today we made it a point that we had to be aggressive, we had to be on the front foot and manage the game well, and most importantly get the three points. I think overall, the performance was really good by the team.
This win is important for us to take now and takes positives from it and take it going into the next game.
Q. Miami came in in really good form. They have not conceded too many goals. Do you think this is a statement by your side?
JONATHAN OSORIO: Sure. I think that things are really clicking, really clicked today. The team was moving well. I think we improved from the first three games, a lot of talking and video and stuff, fixing stuff during the week and I think it today in the game, everything. Defensively we were aggressive and we found ourselves to step and make ourselves high up the pitch and I think with the ball we were really good. That's a team that I think was in form, and you know, it's a really good performance today.
Q. Stupid question but do you feel cold on a night like that? It was pretty frigid.
JONATHAN OSORIO: I'm not going to lie, you feel it but as professionals, you deal with it. I've played in colder temperatures to be honest but today was a cold one. After the home opener, I'm thinking, you know, a week later, maybe a little bit better weather, but no, it was worse. But that's Toronto. And to be honest, I love it either way. It is what is it in the end and I think the guys showed that it wasn't a factor for us during the game.
Q. It was a nice team goal. How did it play out in your mind? Did you know Richie was going to play it back?
JONATHAN OSORIO: Yeah, if you have, which you have, you've seen a lot of our games and a lot of my goals come this way. I think the team -- today we had a few chances in the first half to get this play, to get this kind of play going. I think a few times the final ball didn't come off toward Richie and we missed our chances a few times.
But that one, you see when it comes off good and the timing's good where we can be really dangerous. Obviously we have the best back in the lead and when he overlaps like that, it's dangerous for our team and it just takes runners being aggressive in the box and for me, I feel like that's one of my strengths. Yeah, it was a really good overall play by the team and I think that's something that we can look to build ongoing into the next games.
Q. Inaudible.
JONATHAN OSORIO: Yeah, I think every game he's getting better and every training session he's getting better and he's learning the system more and more. I think this is a system that's different to what he was used to in Dallas for the beginning of his career, and yeah, this is a young kid with so much talent and a lot of potential.
He really showed it today. He was a big factor winning balls back for us. He was great today and for me he's just getting better each game. We are really excited to see what he can bring for the rest of the season.
Q. You're obviously proud to be representing Canada, but it would be nice to build on this win next week in San Jose, but you and three others are going to be heading off. What do you think about playing during these international breaks?
JONATHAN OSORIO: It's tough for us. Obviously we want to be here for every game for our club, but then again, we also want to play every game for our country as well. I think the MLS has to doing with some the scheduling. I understand it's already a packed schedule.
Now they added League's Cup, which I think is a good thing for the league but at the same time in Europe they find a way to have international break and over here, I feel like they have to do the same because in a league that's growing, you're going to have more and more internationals not only here but on every team in the League. And this can't be that, you know, he team in the League is playing during this international break and missing key players. I think going forward, that's not fair.
So for me, the league going forward has to find a way to have the break, I think, and for international dates; at the same time not jam-packing us with games week-in and week-out or mid week games as well. There has to be a balance, and I think that's something that the league has to take a look at.
Q. Between the goal celebration and the fans -- how important is having those feelings --
JONATHAN OSORIO: Yeah, it's huge, especially I think with the way our season has gun, this win is huge and it's huge for us, it's huge for the fans, especially for the ones coming and braving this cold and being there supporting us. It's important that we deliver a performance like this for them because they deserve it for their energy that they give us during this game and for coming in the first place. You know, in difficult temperatures.
So yeah, it's important. It's important for the team and the guys in the locker room as well as for our relationship with the supporters.
Q. I know you're not one to talk about personal accolades but this is the 11th season in a row you've scored; what did that mean to you and to do that being part of this club?
JONATHAN OSORIO: It means a lot to be a part of this club, 11 goals in 11 seasons, or the goals in 11 seasons, it's my job. I think that's what I'm here to do. So that's whatever.
But being here with this club for that long is, of course, everybody knows how much that means to me and how much I care for this club, and every game, I go out there and I give a thousand percent. I give it all on the pitch and with my teammates along with my teammates, and yeah, you know, just looking forward to now bringing this club back to what I feel like where it belongs.
Q. Do you remember your first goal?
JONATHAN OSORIO: Of course. You never for get your first time. Yeah, I mean, you don't forget the one against -- my first game at BMO, ever, I scored against the Galaxy. You remember that. I remember a lot of moments here. It's something I don't take for granted. Each game I play here is special. I don't take it for granted. My family, every game is here. I get to play in front of my family, my friend and my people, my people of Toronto. It's a great blessing.
Q. Inaudible?
JONATHAN OSORIO: Very important. We want to first of all take care of these two games, get these wins, and win performing well to get ourselves to the next round and to the semifinals, and yeah, first is focusing on these games but yeah, this is I think a tournament that we have our eyes set on winning and we feel after the World Cup, we want to keep moving this program forward and keep rising expectations, and so yeah, this is important now that after the World Cup run and everything that we keep this going.
