Josh Allen

Weekday Press Conference

Q. Congrats on the AFC Player of the Week.

JOSH ALLEN: Thank you.

Q. Is it pretty cool when you hear? Obviously, I'm sure, someone would have liked to have it last year, but you're the first Jaguar to get it since Calais in 2019.

JOSH ALLEN: Really? What week Calais had it? The Titans game?

Q. The Titans game, yeah.

JOSH ALLEN: That would make sense.

It's a huge accomplishment for myself and for this team. It's just how we all played. When we all fly around, when we all do our things, somebody's going to be there. Kudos to teammates for helping me get success. I can't do it without them, obviously. Definitely thankful for that being the opportunity to get that award. Hopefully I get some more.

Q. You said Sunday you were excited to watch the tape and watch it back. What did you see when you watched the tape back?

JOSH ALLEN: Guys never quit, man. It was just at that bend, no break mentality defense, man. They had a couple shots, but when they got in the red zone, we stopped them. We pushed them back. So just to see us play mistake free football.

And this is kind of crazy because like I know I've been saying that the last couple weeks, but then in like watching actual games, and then you can just tell, okay, this team probably won because this team had this many mistakes, you know what I'm saying? Or this team won the turnover battle. Every team, it's like who's going to make the least amount of mistakes.

The defense collectively, we played sound football, and we played for each other, and we played fast and physical all game. But that's just the standard we have for ourselves, man. That's the standard we feel like we could have been playing, in our minds, that we could have been playing at the whole time. Now that we actually did it for four full quarters consistently every play, that's just the standard that we have set for ourselves now.

So high standards for us, and we're going to go out there and stop this run and do what we do best.

Q. You look more comfortable dropping now. After two years of not dropping, are you maybe getting back into a groove of what you did at Kentucky and in college in dropping and feeling comfortable as a linebacker?

JOSH ALLEN: Yeah, I used to -- you know, it's a part of the game now. If that's me in that situation, I'm going to make the best of it, you know what I'm saying? Okay, the ball come to me, I'm going to get a pick.

That's how I've got to motivate myself to get this job. I know somehow just knowing information like, okay, if I know I got this drop and I got this formation, he might throw this ball to this person. So I've got to always be aware of that.

Now I'm starting to, you know what I'm saying, feel the game out on that aspect, and now it's starting to slow down for me a little bit. It's just fun going out there and just knowing what you're doing. Now I know what I'm doing, so now I can just play fast and just make a lot of plays out there.

Q. I'll ask you the same question I asked Dawuane. From your standpoint, how has he progressed?

JOSH ALLEN: Dawuane, he just wins, you know what I mean? He's a winner. If you look at the pressure rate, I believe, I think he should be up there. I know he got more than me probably because he started off fast. You know what I'm saying? I've been watching Smoot, Bro, how you do that? Picking his brain. Show me that. Let's work on it.

Then once I finally got my groove now, we're both eating together and we always picking each other's brains about all the little things. Just to have that chemistry -- because we trained together this off-season. We're working, you know what I'm saying? Just to have that trust that he knows I put my all into this and I know he put his all into this just makes it even better to know we finally have success, we're playing for each other, and we're just having a good time out there.

Q. I know you mentioned in your earlier question, stopping the run. Obviously, that's an emphasis this week. What's different about Jonathan Taylor compared to some of the other running backs you faced?

JOSH ALLEN: He's just explosive, you know what I'm saying? He breaks tackles. He's in and out of backs, and he can catch the ball well. He's a great, physical running back, and it's a good challenge this week.

We have been statistically good against the run, and we're hoping to keep that trend going. We have all the faith that we will. For us, we have to stop the run first if we want to have any success in the back end or just rushing the passer.

We're getting ready for this challenge, and we're looking forward to it. We're ready to play.

Q. Smoot said if you can stop the run and limit Wentz to five yards a play, then that's kind of a formula for success for you guys. Can you elaborate on that a little bit, about how much of a focus is that? If you limit Carson Wentz to five-yard throws, like why is that part of the game plan?

JOSH ALLEN: Going to take him a long time to score, you know what I mean? It's just going to give us more opportunities for us to get our hands up, us get batted balls, us get picks, us get forced fumbles and for him to hold the ball more.

It just creates opportunity, checkdowns, checkdowns. I don't know what quarterbacks think, I can take the shot. We've been getting off the ball so much, okay, so here's the opportunity for us to get the sack. Let's make the best of it.

Definitely checkdown -- we don't want to throw checkdowns the whole game, but I know as a D-line, we emphasize stack monsters, getting out of the stack. If it's in our bubble, go get it. That's what we emphasize, and that's what we're going to do. We know it's going to come out quick if he does, and we're ready to go chase anything down.

Q. Any consideration changing your name to Carson this week?

JOSH ALLEN: I'll think about it (laughter).

Q. What's been the difference for you the past month of the season? You've talked about hitting your groove.

JOSH ALLEN: Oh, man, I feel like just the chemistry that we have up front, man, it makes me more relaxed. It makes me feel like I trust this dude. We hang out so much. We have that bond.

It's like when we play, we play, but we know when it's time to work, we're all working. We're all trying to get each other better. We're talking and communicating and laughing. We're getting on each other, you know what I'm saying, but we know, when we turn the film on, we all play for each other.

That's been the biggest take-away, I feel like looking at it deeper is just the chemistry we have, and the chemistry that we're getting with the whole defense is just growing every week and every day actually. We're a tight knit group, and we're going to continue to be a tight knit group, continue to fight for each other, and hopefully continue to win a lot more games.

Q. Going back to working out together in the off-season, I know you work out with the other guys, how does it feel to see that playing out on the field? See that chemistry translate to on the field?

JOSH ALLEN: Man, it's a great feeling. Just thinking about Jason, you know what I'm saying? Jason Smith, man, just going out there and training and just not wanting to go but you know you got to go and you know Smoot going to be there and A.G. going to be there and all these guys going to be there.

I know I've got to perform. I want to perform at a high level this year, so to have that mind state, I'm going to come in here and I'm working. We're going to have fun and joke, but when we're lifting this weight, we're going to lift, and I'm going to out lift everybody in here. That was just our mindsets all together.

At that moment, that's when we started to really connect on another level. Hopefully, it don't sound too soft, but that's what it really was, you know what I mean? It shows. It's just a good feeling.

Q. (Inaudible question)?

JOSH ALLEN: Definitely, definitely. I ain't going to tell you what he said, but we can always get better. That's not the ceiling for any of us. It's not the ceiling for me, I feel like. It's not the ceiling for Smoot. This is just a little taste of what we can do when we're all on the same page. We're going to continue to get better. That's the ultimate goal in football is get better.

Q. Did you really not know you were miked up? Did you forget?

JOSH ALLEN: I really did forget, and like it kind of sucked, you know what I mean? I know that's the ultimate -- and I knew it too. I knew it during the week, but once I actually got out there, it was like, okay, I'm locked in. When he said that, I'm like huh? Oh, shit. But I told him I'll make it up to them.

Q. Were you wishing you should have been yelling more, like I'm Josh Allen, or something like that?

JOSH ALLEN: Oh, no. It was a lot of good moments out there, though. I'm going to say that. I'm going to say that. Hopefully, play that every week and set that standard for all of us. Now we can't go back down, you know what I mean?

Now everybody expects it. We're trying to get everybody what we expect, so now just go out there and play.

Q. Were you miked up at the London game too?

JOSH ALLEN: Yeah.

Q. So the unedited version would be worth tracking down?

JOSH ALLEN: Can you all find that?

Q. Probably.

JOSH ALLEN: No.

Q. I know people.

Q. I think you have to be miked up the rest of the season.

JOSH ALLEN: We need to get Trev miked up.
