Coach Sean McVay

Postgame Press Conference

49ers 27, Rams 24 (OT)

SEAN McVAY: Our guys came out ready to go. We've just got to finish. Credit the Niners; they made more plays than we did at the end. We'll move forward the right way. But this one, this was a tough one today.

Q. What changed for your group in the third quarter, particularly after such a dominant first half?

SEAN McVAY: Yeah, we weren't able to run the ball at all. We didn't get any efficiency running the ball, and then we were having trouble protecting.

Q. What was said as far as guys getting back on track? It seemed like in that last drive late in the fourth quarter --

SEAN McVAY: Yeah, guys made plays. I thought an unbelievable play by Jalen and then handful of great plays, individual efforts, Matthew and Cooper hooking up on that 3rd down and then being able to finish it out on the touchdown. But they made a lot of plays.

I thought we were going to be able to win the game there, but we ultimately didn't get it done.

Q. You guys still win the division with Arizona losing, but you lose the No. 2 seed. Does it feel like a blown opportunity?

SEAN McVAY: Yeah, I mean, in the moment right now, this is a tough feeling. Our guys did a good job being able to navigate through the season. To be able to still win the division is a good accomplishment, but I don't know that right now is a time to celebrate that. We'll look at this film, we'll clean it up, and we'll move forward the right way. This is a resilient group.

Q. Was this an uncharacteristic performance for your line? Is that what you're alluding to?

SEAN McVAY: No, not really. They did a good job. They got after us a little bit.

Q. In that first half, for most of the first half you looked like a Super Bowl team. Looked like everything was working.

SEAN McVAY: You've got to finish. Our guys came out ready to go, but you've got to play four quarters, or five quarters in this instance, and credit them, they did a good job. Have to do a better job, we can all do a better job, and fortunately this isn't the end for us.

Q. How do you make sure you get over this one quickly?

SEAN McVAY: You just move on the right way. You look at it, you're honest with the assessment of it and we'll keep it moving and we'll start our preparation as soon as tomorrow.

Q. You guys have won a lot of games where your star players make plays. That happened again today, but obviously there were a lot of other problems that led to you guys losing. As you're evaluating, where this team is right now, what do you look at more, the fact that you do have this kind of big play ability or --

SEAN McVAY: Yeah, I think you've got to look at each play as its own entity. If we end up making a couple plays in that last drive, this is a totally different tenor and temperature of the conversation, but we've got to be able to do it. Not going to make excuses; we'll go back to work and we'll get this thing figured out.
