KC Chiefs Postgame Press Conference

Chiefs 17, Ravens 10

Q. The pass to MVS at the end...

PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, Coach Reid had the confidence to give us a chance to throw the ball in that situation. They brought some pressure. Obviously were very concerned with what Travis was doing.

I looked at it, I think it was receive first. The safety cut him. Gave him a free lane. I put it up, let him make a play. In those situations, you put it up and you don't want to overthrow it. You put it up there, one on one, let a guy make a play. He did that. Made a great catch and sealed the deal.

Q. I assume you never get tired of this?

PATRICK MAHOMES: No, you don't take it for granted either. You never know how many you're going to get to, or if you're going to get to any.

It truly is special. Just to do it with these guys after what we've been through all season long, the guys coming together, it really is special.

I told them, the job's not done. Our job now is to prepare ourselves to play a good football team in the Super Bowl and try to get that ring.

Q. Travis during the week, he was particularly fired up. He said he wanted this one more than any other game. What got into him this week or was it just another week for him?

PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, even those guys, he loves the challenge. I mean, all week, rightfully so, we heard about how great their defense was. They were. They shut us out in the second half. For Travis, that's like, All right, what can I do against this great defense? He has that mindset.

He led us like that. Every single practice, walk-through, he was focused in, locked in, bringing in energy. It makes my job a lot easier when you have a guy that's in that tight end room, receiving room, that he can lead those young guys, show them how we do it, lead us to an AFC championship.

Q. I know how much respect you have for Lamar, what he's been able to do. Your defense has been pretty special throughout the season. To see what they did today, how do you put it into words?

PATRICK MAHOMES: That's special. That's a great team and great quarterback. Spags, it seems like when the games get bigger, challenges get higher, he performs even better. The guys performed the game plan well. Timely turnovers down at the goal line, punching the ball out. I think it was Sneed recovering it. That was a timely turnover obviously.

Whenever they're rolling like that, I have to kind of manage my game. That's stuff I learned throughout the season. Even if we're not having the success I want to have, the defense is rolling, getting stops, take the safe choice, get the ball out of my hand, don't turn the ball over and let's go win a football game.

Q. The first time you've had to go on the road to get here. What was the experience like?

PATRICK MAHOMES: It was cool. Just going into two hostile environments, having to come together as a team to and win those games, to hold that trophy, it really was special.

If I had my choice, I'd rather do it at Arrowhead. After we go to the Super Bowl and hopefully win it, we'll get it back to Arrowhead.

Q. What was the most trying moment of the season?

PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, I mean, I don't like losing any games. Every loss I feel like's tough. But we always had everything we wanted in front of us. We had that mindset. Coach Reid preaches that every single day we come into the building. No one hung their head. Everyone was ready to go. Now we're going to the Super Bowl. Like I said, we're not done.

Q. The play to Travis, float it in there, take us through that, what that reflects about how you play together.

PATRICK MAHOMES: Of course, Travis ran the wrong route and ended up getting the football (smiling).

No, the offensive line did a great job protecting. I was trying to find a way to run, but they were doing a good job of containing me within the D-line.

Travis worked his way to get open. When he's one on one, I give him a chance. I threw the ball. He made a heck of a catch. He's a special player, man. I always say it, but when the lights get brighter, he plays better. That's the true mark of a champion, and that's what he is.

Q. You heard Clark talking about what Andy is like after a loss. What is it like from your perspective after a loss versus when you guys play well and win?

PATRICK MAHOMES: There's no difference. The only time I've seen Coach Reid kind of like a little bit more excited was after winning the Super Bowl. Other than that, it's the same exact person.

That's what you need. You need your leader to be calm, win, loss, no matter what it is, the same person, come to work every single day and put that work in and let us be who we are. He talks about showing your personality, lets us be who we are every single day. He has that demeanor that no matter what the challenge is, we can go out there and attack it.
