Q. Jake, for your first time around at this tournament, feels like things went as well as they possibly could have in the first round of this championship?
JAKE KNAPP: Yeah, definitely can't complain. Got a few putts to fall early. Got one to fall, which I wasn't expecting to go in. So it's always nice when you can have something like that to get the round started.
Q. What was the most important part of the round to keep things going here in the first 18 holes?
JAKE KNAPP: I think staying patient. A course like this, you can't force the issue. There are going to be some obvious just make par holes and others you can just take advantage of. Tried to give myself a bunch of looks.
I didn't have any momentum savers or anything. I made a good par putt on 9 so nice to see that one go in, but overall, it was pretty easy for the most part.
Q. Your overall thoughts for the golf course as you play the first time in tournament conditions and what the field is going to be dealing with the rest of the first rounds.
JAKE KNAPP: It's a challenging course more me. You have to drive it well and you have to strike iron shots properly and obviously be able to judge the wind.
I think it tests a little bit of everything and obviously you can hit what you think is a decent shot and it can bounce somewhere and go somewhere funky. So you have to be able to roll with the punches. But did our best to avoid some of the areas you felt like you didn't want to be in and from there play it wherever it lies.
Q. What does the rest of the day look like for you? Do you take a nap, a Jake Knapp, for that matter? What happens?
JAKE KNAPP: Probably do a little mini-practise session, just hit a few shots from today I kind of want back, and then maybe get a little work out in. I'm going to try not to let myself sleep so I don't have issues tonight for the most part.
Q. How ironic is that?
JAKE KNAPP: I know. I try to stay away from the naps these days.
Q. Opening 64, and 4 seemed to kick-start your round. How did that go?
JAKE KNAPP: Through the fairway on the left-hand side and tried to play a safe shot middle of green and had 35, 40 feet, something like that, and dripped over the front edge. Usually not a putt you're trying to make. Hit it with pace, and fortunate enough for it to go in.
Q. You don't have a lot of experience on links golf. What's the key to playing well in conditions like this?
JAKE KNAPP: I think just being somewhat creative and being able to hit different flights. You don't practise playing -- or I don't play in super high winds. Not to say it's very windy today, but for the most part you kind of want the ball on the ground and to use the ground and not try to fight it. I haven't played a ton of links golf but I feel like it fits my game pretty well. I like to be creative and hit different shots and just fits my eye.
Q. First in strokes gained off the tee; how important is that on a course like this?
JAKE KNAPP: It's huge. Downwind holes, try to take advantage of my length and obviously try to keep it out of all the bunkers out there for the most part. That's been our main focus. I've been driving it well over the last month. Drove it well in Detroit, so trying to keep that trend going. Just use my length when I can.
