Press Conference

Q. How excited are you about the week ahead?

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: It's great. Normally it's a 4,000-mile commute to work. Now it's a four-minute commute to work, which is a home tie, which is unusual. I think Billy Andrade had it last time at the U.S. Senior Open when it was at Newport Beach in Rhode Island.

It's very rare that it comes around that you're playing at home but it's just a lovely place to be. Look behind us. It's a beautiful spot. All the Americans love it here. They think it's their -- well, it's our Pine Valley in many ways, which is a huge compliment for Sunningdale, and it's great to be at home.

Q. I wanted to talk to you about how fitting a venue this is for a Senior Open. Søren Kjeldsen cited this as his top three in the world. I believe you mentioned recently that this would be, if you had the choice, your last place to play a round.

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: I think if I had one last round to play, this would be right at the top of the list. I think it's one of the nicest walks. It's the best walks in golf, whether you're carrying your own bag or card and pencil or TV cameras watching, whatever it is, it's one of the best walks in golf. We're very, very lucky to have it where we do, and it is superb, absolutely superb: The design, the look, the feel, the atmosphere. You just want a couple of Labrador dogs to just go around and that type of thing and really enjoy yourself.

Q. I know you'd like to add the trophy to the cabinet. I saw you yesterday in the Pro-Am, you were making moves early on?

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: We did okay in the Pro-Am yesterday. I enjoyed it and I actually played okay. I think it's a course that suits me more than some. It's not the longest course, par 70 is quite strict, mind you. It's a tough 70 with only two par 5s, but at the same time, got to hit the fairways. And that's what I do; the best I've done in my career is hit fairways. So if I can do that, we can score.

You never know. If a couple of putts go in we can get into some sort of contention, not just competing in the tournament but actually into contention. So we look forward to it.

But at 62 years old now, it's getting harder. There's no question. I was talking to Langer who is coming up 68, and he's really feeling a difference now from 65. He said from 65 to 68 is a big difference. I felt from 65 to 62 is a big difference.

Usually you make your move in this Champions Tour or the Seniors Tour early, early doors, 50 to 55, as I did, I suppose. But you hang on, and it's difficult. You're playing against guys, the Cabreras of the world, the Harringtons, the Stewart Cinks, the guys that are still flying the ball 300 yards, flying it 300 yards, which is extreme.

So it has become difficulty, of course it does, as the new guys come through and you get older. But I still have the ambition and the drive to succeed and the passion for it all and as long as that remains, we're okay.

See how it goes. I really am excited to perform well. I've got my son caddying for me, Cameron, who is off scratch himself. He knows his way around here as well. So we're looking forward to the whole event, yeah.

Q. Hopefully with some local knowledge, we'll see you at the top of that leaderboard.

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: Hopefully.
