Quick Quotes

Q. Pretty good way to start a major championship. You came back from a rough start.

SO YEON RYU: Yeah. Well, bogey, bogey is never really good start, but I think I was able to hold enough putt.

I mean, of course I did not make like everything, but I think I was able to make like good amount of birdies to come back from the two bogeys with the start.

Q. Tell me about those birdies. Any of these particularly long or...

SO YEON RYU: No. I think everything was pretty much in range, like about I want to say 12 feet. So I think my iron shot was pretty great today.

And then recently I wasn't really happy with my ball shaping, like ball striking, but today like I'm still like not absolutely satisfied with my tee shot, but I was really happy with my iron shot.

Q. Overall it is a good way to start a major championship.

SO YEON RYU: For sure.

Q. You feel like you're getting your week off to a good start?

SO YEON RYU: I think I had a really good rest, like freshen up just being away from the golf a little bit. Had a great time with my family and friends.

And then I was able to focus on golf with the fresh mind this upcoming -- since this Monday. So I think that was really helpful.

And then I think especially with my putting my alignment was a little off. After having some weeks off I was able to see something different and then I guess that worked today, so hopefully it's going to work for the rest of the future.

Q. Absolutely. You come here after three weeks off. Last time you tee'd it up was KPMG, correct?

SO YEON RYU: Yep.

Q. What did you in the three weeks?

SO YEON RYU: Didn't do anything for probably the first few days mand then I went on trip with my mom, auntie, and cousin and we had a really great time.

Then I went to play night golf with my friends from university. So I didn't really take it seriously with the golf. I just wanted to keep playing with good people. Golf is the best way to hang out I think, so I think it's -- sometimes you just need to be away to thinking more straightly.

Q. That was back home in Korea?

SO YEON RYU: Yep, yep.

Q. It's safe to say maybe you haven't played as well as you want to this year. Do you think that has helped you, kind of that getaway for a bit?

SO YEON RYU: For sure. For sure. I'm also like perfectionist, and then to be honest, I've been playing pretty consistent golf for last, I don't know, ten years of my career.

So I guess just my expectation level is so high. That one just make me more tough to go through this patch.

But it's golf and I'm human being. I mean, it'll be nice to play great all the time like robot, but this is golf. I'm human being. So it's kind of impossible to play great all the time.

I think it just takes kind of long time to accept that fact. Now I accepted it. All I can do is what I need to do, and then I just cannot control all the result.

So right now I'm just focused on what I can do.

Q. That is the nice thing about golf. You finish up these 18 holes and it's a brand new 18 holes tomorrow.

SO YEON RYU: Exactly, yeah. Yeah, golf is fascinating. Sports, I mean, it definitely make me a little crazy, but I still love this sport so much. I think that's why nobody really gave up on this game and we just keep grinding.
