Quick Quotes

Q. Peiyun, 5-under at the day's end right now with the clubhouse lead. What was the mindset as you got ready for the first round of this year's major?

PEIYUN CHIEN: Actually I saw the pin sheet last night, and I can't sleep. It feels so hard. We're doing very well today, just focused on what I want, what we want, and which way we can miss. I think we did very well today.

Q. You played last week in Hawai'i. How much did playing last week prepare you for this week's major?

PEIYUN CHIEN: A lot, because my caddie always says, you can do it, you are very good, and just focus on every shot, come in every shot and you can do it, no problem.

Q. Did you think a 5-under round was out there today?

PEIYUN CHIEN: No, actually not. We just focused every shot.

Q. You got to 5-under, so a lot of things had to be working. Were you hitting the ball pretty well off the tee and getting it close to the hole with a lot of birdie putts?

PEIYUN CHIEN: Yes, my irons is pretty good today. I made a lot of good birdie putts. I also missed some opportunities, but overall, very good iron shots and very good putts, birdie putts.

Q. Coming in, did you have a number that you thought you might be able to, in these conditions, to shoot? Was there a certain number you were aiming for?

PEIYUN CHIEN: I think 2-under because the front nine par-5s we can't reach, so I think 2-under would be a very good score for this course.

Q. I know there's one other minus 4. Are you surprised there's not more scores that are minus 4 or 5? Are you surprised or not?

PEIYUN CHIEN: No, actually, because the greens are not very hard today, so I think if you can hit the ball very solid, you can very close to the pin.

Q. How were the conditions today? It didn't seem like it was very windy. It was pretty good playing conditions?

PEIYUN CHIEN: Yes, because practice round is pretty windy, and me and my caddie think if the wind starts blowing, it's going to be very hard.

Q. Did you make any long putts?

PEIYUN CHIEN: Yes, just one, on hole 5, 30 feet. Ryann O'Toole showed me the line, and I make it.

Q. You had quite an impressive front nine, which was your back nine holes, a string of birdies. What was working so well, and can you walk me through some of those birdies?

PEIYUN CHIEN: I hit a really good wedge shot on 4 and then I hit a six-foot putt, and the next hole I made a 30-foot birdie, then the next hole I hit a 9-iron to the green, hit it to like six feet and made another good putt. I think I focused on one shot at a time really.
