Quick Quotes

Q. You characterized your round as frustrating yesterday. How would you characterize today's?

JORDAN SPIETH: I thought both rounds tee to green were almost identical. Still not very tight. Not as tight as I've been this year with the ball-striking. Glad I've got a nice afternoon right now to be able to work on it.

But I didn't do anything different. I just tried to believe that the putts would go in. I caught kind of the left side of the hole on the first -- on No. 10, our first hole today, and I caught the right side on the 11th, and all of a sudden now I go to the 12th hole and it's like, wow, the ball doesn't have to go in in the middle; it can go in on the edges. Just putted beautifully today. Better speed control, left it in the right spots.

No bogeys on this course. No wind is going to yield plenty of birdies. I think I took advantage when I could, but No. 1 and 2 you're really looking to play one and a half under, and I've played those holes even. Would like to get off to a little better start on those two tomorrow.

Q. Is there one thing specifically you want to tighten up with the swing?

JORDAN SPIETH: It's just loose. It's just getting some separation and I'm getting a little late and behind it. I'm either hitting toe hooks or I'm leaving it out to the right.

Same kind of stuff, just reverting back to kind of old bad habits, but I feel like I can make some progress, and maybe the tough conditions this weekend will keep me focused outwardly and not so much trying to make everything perfect.

Q. You've had a few pretty good saves from the trees, 18 twice and No. 2 today. How much confidence do you get knowing when you do go wayward off the tee you're able to save those pars?

JORDAN SPIETH: Yeah, I've gotten pretty fortunate for the most part on the really tough positions I've been in, which would be 18th twice, 15 and then No. 2. Those are really the bad spots. Anywhere else I've been has actually been okay.

I pride myself on the ability to judge Bermuda rough really well and be able to leave it in the right spots to not make many bogeys around this place. Those don't exactly count because they were pretty deep in the woods. But pretty fortunate, and like I said, it's a matter of time. You can't get away with that for 72 holes, and I've gotten away with it to this point.

Q. Obviously it's going to get pretty windy this weekend; is the course playing tougher than you thought it would so far or about what you thought?

JORDAN SPIETH: I mean, it was blowing pretty good yesterday afternoon and blowing a weird direction for what we normally see out here.

Today my 4-under today is probably equivalent to my 1-under yesterday. I hit it worse today and just made some more putts. But there wasn't a breath of wind out there. It was a beautiful morning to play golf. My goal was to try and shoot 6 today, so that goal will be significantly adjusted as you look at the forecast the next two days.

Q. Overall how do you feel going into the weekend? Right now four off the lead, but obviously no bogeys today.

JORDAN SPIETH: I feel good just because the ball-striking has been really solid for me, and that's what's been off this week. I feel good about being able to adapt, make adjustments and strike it better on the weekend, and then the hole is starting to look bigger and bigger.

I feel good about tackling this place in some tough conditions. I think I can shoot 5-under on the weekend, and I think you're looking at that being -- with what's forecasted, something around what you need.
