Q. It seemed like you were going back and forth with clubs on 11. Was that the first time the wind started acting up or had it been like that all day?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, I think it was kind of coming in and out. There was times when it wouldn't be very windy and there were times when it would start gusting. Like, 9 was another one where I was over the ball ready to hit, backed off, switched clubs, got ready to hit again, had to take another club back, and hit the longer club and almost hit it in the water short. So that was fun.
Q. Judging what we were watching, it looked like quality -- you were hitting some quality shots, not getting the result you were expecting.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, that's how it felt. Yeah, the wind is just hard to predict. It's just hard to predict. When it gets gusty and then greens are this firm -- I mean, 12's a good example too where you can't -- like, you have 2 or 3 yards where you can actually hold that green, especially with how firm they were getting.
11's a good example too because if I hit 4-iron and it's straight across, if I land pin high, I'm going to go over the green in the rough. 5-iron's tough because when the wind's going like this and this, I could end up 15, 20 yards short of the green in the rough, and then you bring water into play.
So there's a lot you got to think about, and I think it gets even more challenging when the greens are this firm and the wind is unpredictable, especially on a day where the wind felt like it was going to be lighter and it was for most of the day, which is -- I think it just shows kind of how tough the golf course is.
Q. What was your perspective on the 16th hole?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: That's just another really good iron shot, and the wind switched from down off the right to pretty significantly in off the right. If it's down off the right, that ball's probably where I hit my wedge shot to. So just don't really know what I'm supposed to do there outside of trying to hit a good shot, and then it's frustrating when it doesn't work out, especially when it doesn't work out in that direction.
I would rather get gusted in off the left, not in off the right there. All you can do is just try to hit good shots. It can be very frustrating sometimes when you feel like you're hitting good shots and then you're going to the drop zone.
Q. (No Microphone.)
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Not that I can recall at the moment.
Q. You've shown to be very good at bouncing back from slow starts. What's that mindset that works so well for you?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I don't really know. Like, this one is it really that slow of a start? How low are the scores this afternoon?
Q. Yeah.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: You know what I mean? All I can do is compete with kind of the hand I've been given, and teeing off last on this golf course is challenging. A day like today, I'm not sure from where our tee times were if there was going to be very many low rounds out there, and so --
Q. There weren't.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: There wasn't? Yeah.
So I might be two or three shots away from the low round where if we're all sitting in that situation, it's not -- you know, it's hard to predict what it would be if that was the case. But it was just one of those deals where I felt like I was hitting some good shots, really. I made a sloppy swing on 14 and outside of that, I hit what I felt was a lot quality iron shots and didn't really get much for it. Just I think that that's the nature of how the golf course is and kind of how difficult it can get -- I can talk about on 10 too - but I think that's the nature of how difficult the golf course is, especially when the greens get this firm and it's late in the day and they're also really fast and the wind can be a little bit unpredictable. And that's always how it is around this golf course just -- because you have a lot of trees and the wind can start bouncing around in different directions and I think that's just another reason why it's so hard.
Q. What was that club on the 17th?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: 7-iron. Got a good break there. That was fun. That was good. Good breaks are more fun than --that one -- see, that's the thing that can be so frustrating about golf is I striped one on the hole before that and I end up in the water. That one I kind of hit thin, and you get a good bounce and I end up on the fringe and I chip in. Look, it's always a touch thin out of the bunker, but I was trying to hit it a little higher so I could hold the green. And then that one lands in the rough just over the bunker, which is also dead, that bunker, and ended up chipping one in. So you're just like, all right. Yeah, what a game. I felt like I didn't get anything out of the round, all of a sudden you just get a lucky bounce and you're like, okay, well, I'm going to try to smile, it's still hard.
