THE MODERATOR: Eventful week from starting off Monday qualifying to a great opening round. What are you liking so far about the week?
CHARLES PORTER: I absolutely love the course. The weather is incredible. It's not too far from my home in San Francisco. And my game feels really good.
THE MODERATOR: What were the nerves like on opening tee shot?
CHARLES PORTER: Surprisingly, not terrible. I was really just focusing on breathing and, I mean, doing my preshot routine. I striped one. So, I feel good.
THE MODERATOR: Was there any moment or shot that felt comfortable, that really got it rolling?
CHARLES PORTER: I would say the wedge on my second hole, number 11. It went to like five feet. I rolled that one in. I was like, we're going to have a day today.
THE MODERATOR: Who do you have on the bag this week?
CHARLES PORTER: A friend Dave. He's actually a friend of a friend.
THE MODERATOR: He's a member here at this course.
CHARLES PORTER: Yes.
THE MODERATOR: Was he kind of helpful on some of the reads or you knew this course enough from being in the area?
CHARLES PORTER: Yeah, for sure. We misread a few putts down the stretch, but, yeah, he was really helpful.
THE MODERATOR: What are you looking to take into tomorrow's round?
CHARLES PORTER: Just build off today and hopefully improve. Make some more putts. I hit it so well. So that was one thing I did really well.
THE MODERATOR: I believe you have some family and friends that were following along today?
CHARLES PORTER: Yeah. Yeah. Got my brother, a few other friends, and my aunt and uncle should be coming up soon.
THE MODERATOR: Coming out for tomorrow's round or the weekend?
CHARLES PORTER: Yup.
THE MODERATOR: Over at the Open Championship we have someone else leading that's 6'-8".
CHARLES PORTER: Oh, wow.
THE MODERATOR: You don't really see in golf, seeing a lot of tall golfers. Were there any golfers you looked up to as a kid?
CHARLES PORTER: George Archer. So I grew up playing Lincoln park Golf Course in San Francisco. He actually played there a bunch as well. So, he was 6'-6". And there's a little plaque on the putting green that's designated to him. So he's a huge -- he won the Masters, obviously -- a huge influence on me.
THE MODERATOR: What does this show about how golf's trending about athleticism and becoming more and more athletes out there?
CHARLES PORTER: Yeah, I mean, I guess I'm proof in the pudding. You just got to work hard and I'm gifted naturally, so, yeah.
Q. We had the Youth On Course kids out here earlier caddieing for the pro-am. Just wanted to talk about the role they played in you getting into the game of golf.
CHARLES PORTER: Youth on Course was everything growing up. I was part of the Youth on Course at Harding Park. And if it wasn't for the Youth on Course I wouldn't have been able to play golf, so I wouldn't be here. So I really just am so grateful to the organization.
