THE MODERATOR: Now joined by Michael Wright after an opening round 65. Made double bogey on 13 but came back strong after that. Talk about the finish that you had.
MICHAEL WRIGHT: Yeah, I played really nice all day, to be honest. Made quite a few putts out there. Every one that I -- not every one, but most of the putts I should have made, I felt like I did make, which is nice, because that doesn't happen that often.
Yeah, I've got my younger son on the bag, Charlie, and he's helped me read them. I usually never get a caddie to read my putts, but he's got a good eye for it. I've been testing him the last few days, and he's pretty much spot on, so I've been getting him to read putts. Fortunately I'm hitting it on the line we're agreeing on.
That's a bit of the problem, as well; sometimes it's all well and good to read the putts, but if you can't hit them on the line you're still not going to make them. I was able to do that and roll a few good ones in, and made quite a few birdies. I had nine birdies; that's always nice.
Q. Does he play himself, and has he always been a good green reader?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: He does play himself. I've never really tested his reads, to be honest. Only in the last couple weeks I've tested him. Like I said before, he was spot on, so we're going to just keep running with that.
Q. The par-4s and the par-5s today, did you have a preference of a driver or 3-wood? A lot of guys were using 3-woods today.
MICHAEL WRIGHT: Yeah, a mixed bag. Not many drivers on the 4s. Heck, I even hit a 4-iron on a couple of holes.
The fairways are sort of firming up and they're real quick. There's not much grass on them, so the ball is rolling out a lot, so we don't need as much length off the tee as earlier in the week. I sort of picked up on that.
There's a couple of holes I didn't pick up on it that I probably should have, but that's okay. I'm happy with a 64.
Q. Will you do the same thing tomorrow? Do you get on the tee and think 3-wood or driver?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: It just depends. Condition-dependent. If it's into the wind I'm probably going to have to hit a driver somewhere on the 4s. But I don't think there's any rain forecast, so I can't see it softening up any more.
Q. Which kind of putter do you use?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: I've got an Odyssey No. 7.
Q. Heel shaft or center shaft?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: Just normal.
Q. The way your son read the putts, can you tell us a little bit about the way he reads them? Does he show you how to putt?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: He doesn't show me how to putt, he shows me where to hit it. He chooses the line. Sometimes it was slightly different to what I picked, but his influence on me has been really, really good. We're going to keep running with it and just see where it takes us.
Q. What was it like playing with Greg today? There's a lot of Aussies out here.
MICHAEL WRIGHT: It's great, isn't it.
Q. How does that help comfort levels and that sort of stuff?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: Oh, for sure. There's only 78 players in the field, and I think there might be 10, 11, something like that. That's a pretty good ratios for Aussies in the field. We've got a real good camaraderie between us, so we just have fun out here. It's a pretty relaxed tour, and it's even more relaxed when you've got Aussies by your side.
Q. How many times has Charlie caddied for you out on tour?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: This is his first champions event and his first event ever was three weeks ago in Australia. He's doing a great job. I love having him on the bag.
Q. How is the father-son dynamic?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: It's great. My oldest son, he caddies for me full-time. Charlie is just doing it for a couple events before he starts college back in Australia. We're having fun. It's really good.
Q. What was his experience like today?
MICHAEL WRIGHT: Pretty sure he enjoyed it. It looked like he was having a bit of fun. He's a nice calm relaxed kid, and it's just a perfect combination, I think.
