Quick Quotes

Q. David Toms, finished with an impressive bogey-free 9-under 63. What was the biggest difference coming from yesterday into today's round?

DAVID TOMS: Probably had a few more looks at birdie. Still putted well yesterday, but today I kept the putter going and just had a few more looks at it today.

Any time you make nine birdies you obviously rolled the ball well. That was the key today. Speed was good on the greens. Once you don't really have to think about the speed, if you can just think about the line and the speed come natural, that's the way I putted today and it worked really well.

Q. With all those birdies was there a specific shot that stood out or a specific hole?

DAVID TOMS: You know, not really. I mean, my medium range putting from 20, 25 feet was really good, so I made some of those, which that's always kind of a bonus.

Played some of the tougher holes well, which is good. Played the par-3s really good again. I birdied all four of them yesterday and played them well again today, so that's really been the key so far.

Q. It's Valentine's Day. Do you have anything for your wife or...

DAVID TOMS: Just apologize for waking her up this morning. I forgot that it was Saturday actually. I thought -- we have painters at our house doing work and I thought they would be there and they weren't because it was Saturday, so I woke her up. Just apologized for that, and Happy Valentine's Day.

Q. You've had a lot of these rounds like this over the years. When you get into this groove, the birdie groove, especially on the front nine when you had the consecutive birdies, what's kind of the conversation like with you and your caddie? Or is it do you just get into the flow of things?

DAVID TOMS: Yeah, I wouldn't say there is a whole lot of -- when I'm playing well he just kind of gets out of the way and makes sure I have the right yardage or the right read if I ask for it, the right club if I ask for it. If I don't ask for anything he usually doesn't say much.

He's been around me for over 20 years so kind of knows that. On a day like today or even yesterday, it's just not a whole lot going out there between us. It's nice when you can do that. That means, not that it's coming easy, but things are pretty clear in front of you as far as the plan goes.

Q. And you have also been in this position a lot over the years, either at the lead or tied for the lead, sleeping on the lead going into the final round. Is there a particular strategy that you do or just things that you do or just is that varied by tournament?

DAVID TOMS: It's one of those things that, especially out here on our tour with the three rounds, it's really you have to play well every day. So you can't really back into anything.

I'll have to go out and play really good golf again. I'm sure there is somebody that's four, five shots back that will play a similar round like I did today, so you got to go out there and make it happen when you can.

So that will be the game plan.

We'll see obviously what the wind does. Hasn't really picked up real -- to make it real difficult during the round. You have to pay attention to it, but it's not something that has a huge affect on your shots.

So we'll see what that does tomorrow. That could affect the game plan for everybody.

Q. Last one: The golf course and the conditions out today, with it being Saturday, Valentine's Day, talk about the conditions in the round today.

DAVID TOMS: Oh, it was just perfect. I mean, you see why there is so many people, why it will take me every red light three cycles to get through it. I'd live down here too if I could. It's like this a lot. So you see the beauty of it and people are down here, and I'm glad some of us came out to watch us play today.
