Harold Varner III

Quick Quotes

Q. Harold, just quickly assess your round if you could.

HAROLD VARNER III: Obviously no bogeys is pretty good around there. I hit it really well. Just didn't hole the putts enough to keep it going.

Overall, obviously super satisfied. Other than Cameron Young's score, I was right there.

Q. You got to play with Morgan Hoffmann today. Morgan hasn't played in over three years on the PGA TOUR. What's your impressions of his game coming back out here after that long off?

HAROLD VARNER III: He's still good at golf. It's like riding a bike. Obviously it's going to take a while to get the rust off, but it's just good to see him.

The last time I saw him was actually here probably three years ago here. We played together, and he wanted to go fly and watch theCanes play and then come back and play a round. I'm like, no, I'm good man.

Q. What was your take-away from Augusta? Obviously three really good days and one tough day. Did you learn something about yourself, about your game?

HAROLD VARNER III: 100 percent. Obviously, I can respond. I think that's what the best people in the world do in life. I don't really lack confidence, but it just fuels the fire a little bit more.

I just want to win. You and I have talked about this since I was 21 years old. So the goal's still the same and just got to stay on it. It's pretty cool seeing your name up there in the Ryder Cup standings.

So every week I just want to keep -- it's a long ways away, but a couple good weeks, you could be there, and then I don't have a Captain's Pick. So yeah.

Q. Go back to Morgan real quick. Did you see anything different in the swing from what you remember, whether it's physical or just anything else, or in conversations you had out there today?

HAROLD VARNER III: I did not, but I'm not a very aware person, never have been. I'm out there to beat Morgan. I don't really care -- I get that he's been through a lot, but everyone on this planet's going to go through something, and that's his battle. My battle may come down the road later.

When you're on the golf course, it's time to compete. I want to win. I don't know. That's kind of messed up, but it is what it is.

Q. On that topic too, the one thing I noticed, played a really good round with Morgan, but he was consistently pretty far behind you guys off the tee. Is that something you kind of flagged? Is that something that you think, when you go to courses with length, it might give him a little trouble?

HAROLD VARNER III: No, because he hit his 5 iron close to where I hit my 8-iron, so I don't think it really mattered. If you were watching the whole round, I know on No. 3, I outdrove him by 30 yards, but he hit it to 4 feet and I'm sitting there at 20, 25 feet.

That's what makes the game so beautiful. He knows how to hone in on what he needs to do to play well.
