Quick Quotes

Q. Solid 68 to start here. How do you feel about your day and what was working well for you?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, a little scrappy but the putter felt good. Still getting used to the green speeds, I'd say. After Augusta, playing these, it's a bit of a change. But these are pure. They did a great job with the course. Just got to be careful with some iron shots because the greens are hard to hold in some areas. No, overall pleased with my round.

Q. Is there any type of shot shape that you felt was particularly important to dial in your type of shot?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, just fairway balls. A lot of tee shots are uncomfortable. If you can find something that fits your eye to get into the fairway, for me that's a lot of low shots. I see that all over the place. Probably continue to work on that.

Q. Is there a particular tee shot here that you're like really sure of what you might do into a day where the strategy could be a couple different options?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Based on wind, yeah, probably. A lot of them based on wind direction or you could club way down, you don't need a lot, or you have to club up if it's into the wind.

Q. Did it feel at all like a homecoming today out there?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, we had some family support and some Colleton people. It was a lot of fun out there.

Q. Would you say this is only your fifth competitive full round, too, or did you play 18 in any of the practice rounds?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: I did not play 18 in the practice rounds, so yeah, probably the fifth full round I'd say.

Q. You're doing a pretty good job of learning things. Yesterday you thought there were a couple shots you had to figure out still?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, still loving the course. I think it's just really plot yourself around, and I love those types of courses.

Q. Obviously you started hot today and you still even left a few shots out on the table. What do you learn from this round that you're going to take going into the rest of the tournament?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Just work on speed with my putting. Was a little bit all over the place early on. Just continue to get comfortable with the grass and the terrain.

Q. It seemed like there were people clapping for you on every hole. How does that feel?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Awesome. Definitely love to have people out cheering you on.

Q. I asked you about this back on KFT, but the context is different now, about your moving to South Carolina. Can you reflect on the decision to move here and how that has kind of helped you take the next step in your career?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, part of the reason I wanted to move was probably to get better on Bermuda and just the style of golf that's over here. I feel like I definitely got used to that and started to like it a lot more. But we play all over, so doesn't matter where you go; you've got to get used to different areas and grass types and stuff like that.

Q. What is life like in South Carolina?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: I mean, it's low country. It's easygoing. But yeah, we're living in Florida now, so we're still close by, but it's comfortable living.

Q. When did you move to Florida?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Off-season, this last off-season.

Q. Would you say in terms of the switch from Augusta to here, how different are the courses?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Probably polar opposites. You have incredibly wide, forgiving fairways at Augusta in some parts, and the most slope you'd ever see in your life on the greens. Then here, they're really small greens, a lot smaller greens. In some areas really flat with subtle breaks. Then the tee shots, you've got overhanging trees everywhere.

Other than 18 at Augusta, this is a lot different.

Q. Kind of looking back at your career journey, was moving to South Carolina kind of a good reset mentally after the grind and injury troubles and stuff?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, definitely went through my patch, and still kind of coming out of an injury, and I think moving, getting closer to family and moving from West Coast to East Coast kind of helped me get through that.

Q. Is it a little bit easier to build momentum and get into a round playing in twosomes, especially when both players are playing well?

BRIAN CAMPBELL: Yeah, of course. Anytime you're playing with guys who are playing well, it's easy to feed off that. I can't speak for everyone, but I think we all love twosomes. We love playing quick out there. Finish your putts and get moving.
