Q. What went wrong on the five holes you didn't birdie or eagle?
XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Didn't hit it close enough and didn't hole a putt, unfortunately.
Q. Obviously, boys, that's a tournament record here. I know it's not a regular 59, if you will, but you must have some pride in what you've just done.
XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Yeah, it counts for me. I haven't done it before. I don't think Pat has either. I'll count it in my book.
PATRICK CANTLAY: We played really well, made a lot of putts today on a day that was a little tricky with the wind and didn't birdie a lot of the same holes. When you do that in this format, that's really the key.
Q. Clearly you're giving yourself a nice little buffer for the difficulty of alternate shot, but do you feel like you guys are ready to, I guess, keep the foot down and keep moving forward here?
PATRICK CANTLAY: It's just the first quarter. So the buffer, we're only one shot ahead, but we are going into a format on Friday that we really like. I think Xander and I really like alternate shot. It's one of our strengths for the week, and we're really looking forward to it.
Q. The way it came down there on 18, it became apparent that it was on your ball to make the number. Did you feel like it would normally trying to make a 59? It was all you on you there at the end.
PATRICK CANTLAY: I wasn't really thinking about 59 just because it's best ball. Yeah, I mean, just trying to make a birdie on par-5 like every other week.
Q. Xander, you're off to such a hot start. How do you keep that momentum going? How do you make sure that you don't waste that 5-under through five, et cetera?
XANDER SCHAUFFELE: I feel like alternate shot is almost the recipe for it. Golf is a cliche, one shot at a time. Alternate shot is literally for each one of us one shot at a time. We have to do our very best to leave our partner in the best position possible to try and score on the hole.
Like Pat said, with the wind blowing, it's going to take a lot of patience and a lot of good thinking around the property to try and make alternate shot as easy as possible.
Q. I don't know what your plan was last year for alternate shot, as far as who teed off on which hole, but whatever that plan was, will you stick with it?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, I'll take the evens, and Xander will take the odds.
XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Yep, there it is.
PATRICK CANTLAY: I'm looking forward to walking less, the cut-throughs.
