Quick Quotes

Q. Looked like, Charlie, you had a couple birdies on your own ball, and then Dad kind of kicked in with some nice approach shots on the back. How do you feel the day went?

CHARLIE WOODS: Felt pretty good. I didn't hit it great but Dad saved me on a couple of them and I rolled them in.

TIGER WOODS: It's a scramble. So we're trying to pull off each and every shot for each other, and to ham-and-egg, and I think we did that great pretty much the entire day.

CHARLIE WOODS: Yeah.

TIGER WOODS: We picked each other up, which was great. And Charlie made pretty much most of the putts today.

Q. Your own comeback, were you encouraged to see what you saw out of your game especially on the back nine?

TIGER WOODS: I'm just trying to have fun out here. I'm very rusty and as I said it's a scramble, and so we're just trying to have fun out there. Ham-and-egg each other. Push each other in great spots, and just root for each other to pull off the shot that we want.

Q. I know you're downplaying it, but you did seem to have some pop especially off the tee. I don't know if you're getting it out there as far as you'd like to but considering where you've been, you've got to be pleased with that, at least. It looked pretty good from that standpoint?

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, it's okay.

CHARLIE WOODS: You're keeping up with me.

TIGER WOODS: I know. I get the downwind, I'm okay. That whole idea is just to have fun out there. These are big fairways and I can let it go a little bit from time to time. If not, just hit my little peeler and play and move on.

Q. Do you feel like it's a matter of time until you win this event?

TIGER WOODS: I hope so. We're right there. There's a bunch of teams that are up there. We're going to have to shoot another ground tomorrow. And you know, make a bunch of birdies and hopefully we can do that and get off to a good start, and then develop it into the back nine.

Q. Charlie seems pretty comfortable in this environment. He's done it a few times now obviously. Just wonder, back to when you were his age, 15, and I think at that age was the first time you met Jack at that outing at Bel Air. I wonder if you remember that day, were you nervous? Were you as comfortable as he is now?

TIGER WOODS: No. It's a different time and era. I didn't have this much attention. As you said, I met Jack that day, but also I met Byron Nelson for the first time that day, as well. That was a great day back in those days. I warmed up for Jack, and I had to get back for my high school match that afternoon.

That's what Charlie is doing. He's playing golf with us, and then playing the high school matches. The type of attention is very different than what I had. We didn't have social media. We didn't have camera phones. We didn't have any of that. It was kind of hearsay amongst neighbors. It was a different time and era.

Q. Were you pretty comfortable at that time, or were you still in a little bit of awe or nervous?

TIGER WOODS: Of course. I'm always nervous out there. That's the fun part. I've always told you guys that if I'm not nervous, that means I don't care. I care about what I do. And so yes, I've gotten more comfortable over the years playing in front of people. That just happens through experience and time.

But yes, I was nervous on that first tee shot today. It was great. It's good to feel those butterflies.

Q. At your age, there's great growth year-to-year. How much better and comfortable do you feel today, as opposed to a year ago?

CHARLIE WOODS: I don't know, it's just as I get older, I learn how to deal with different things. Like last year, I focused so much on winning and playing, instead of everything else and having fun out there.

Like Dad said, I did a lot better today.

Q. Do you suspect, though, as you get closer, and now you can look at a scoreboard and you're close, that that competitiveness will kick back in?

TIGER WOODS: It's always there.

Q. At some point, you're thinking, we're going to start to win this?

CHARLIE WOODS: It's always there. It's always there. Just got to have fun. That's what we've got to go back to.

Q. What would it mean to you to win this?

CHARLIE WOODS: I don't know, we've got to figure that out first. We've got to get there, and then I'll tell you.

Q. Probably seems unfair that your dad at your age got to meet Byron Nelson and you just get to meet Justin Thomas.

CHARLIE WOODS: Yeah, he's a little worse than Byron but I'll make do.

Q. What do you consider your biggest learning experience this year?

CHARLIE WOODS: U.S. Junior.

Q. Why? What about it?

CHARLIE WOODS: It's, again, about focusing on my playing. I was so focussed on winning and how I played that it kind of crept into kind of how am I going to win, instead of how I'm going to play the shot, and it kind of built up and that caused two very, very bad rounds of golf.

But live and learn.

TIGER WOODS: Learn.

Q. I see you got the Jupiter Golf Links hat on. Have you had a chance to get inside the SoFi Center?

CHARLIE WOODS: No. I have no clue what it looks like. But I'm sure it's awesome.

Q. Can we get your reaction to the PGA announcing 500,000 for Ryder Cup U.S. Team, 300,000 going to charity and a 200,000 stipend?

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, I think it's great. It's three times as much money that the players were able to donate to charity. So I think it's a great move and headed in the right direction.
