Friday Morning Foursomes
JOHN DEVER: Welcome back to the 43rd Ryder Cup.
Q. You got up early and stepped on the gas pedal. What was going right from the start of the match?
XANDER SCHAUFFELE: First off, we feel very comfortable playing with each other. We're good friends. I know it's a big scene and a big crowd and long awaited, but it was another day for Pat and I. We play every week multiple times, and happy to run with Pat.
PATRICK CANTLAY: Making birdie on the first, dream start and Xander hit a great shot in there and the way we won 2 was big for momentum and birdie 3, best start I could imagine, and Xander rolled in that putt on 5 and then we were rolling. A start like that, I'm really glad we kept our nerve and kept our foot down and really pleased them out early.
Q. Considering the experience of the two players you're up against in The Ryder Cup in particular, could you possibly have dreamed about a Ryder Cup debut like this?
PATRICK CANTLAY: Yeah, it's exactly what we wanted. We want those kind of matchups. I think I speak for Xander a little bit here, but that's what it's all about. We were excited when we saw that paring, and all the pressure is on them.
They have seen it all and they are expected to maybe have a little veteran edge, and I was really glad we got that pairing.
Q. You mentioned the friendship between you. Can you speak briefly how that benefits you as a pair moving forward?
XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Simple. We have each other's back, and Pat and I don't talk a whole lot. I think everyone who knows us, especially when we play, we don't talk a whole lot. So he'll walk ahead or I'll walk ahead and we just kind of give each other looks, and that's enough to sort of build on momentum. We are similar in that sense and I think that's very helpful when competing.
PATRICK CANTLAY: This being our maiden voyage, it's helpful having someone that I'm extremely comfortable with.
