p.m. Quick Quotes

Q. J.J., your first Ryder Cup point. I know the overall scoreboard isn't what you wanted to see, but some big shots at the end there. Just describe it from your point of view.

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, not much experience, but I leaned on my partner for a lot of wisdom and guidance, and he helped me push through and finish strong there at the end.

Q. Xander, you were part of the team in 2021 that dominated the Ryder Cup and won 19-9. How is this happening? It's completely the reverse.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: They're playing unbelievable golf. I think if you look at it through -- the course is set up relatively easy, and they're making a lot of birdies and we're not. They're just beating us flat out, and I'm just happy to get a point with J.J. We're going to try and have small victories right here, and a little bit of red on the board is a win today.

Q. You guys were able to get it done. How important was emphatic was that point giving you some hope and optimism heading into tomorrow?

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I think at this point of the tournament, any point matters. Small victories, like Xander said, and we've just got to carry some sort of momentum going into tomorrow.

Q. Xander, how does the team stay motivated with this large a deficit?

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: I mean, these are really tough matches. If you look up at the board, there are a lot of close matches, and they are getting the best of us right now. Just proud of the guys. We've been fighting. It's a proud team, and losing right now is not very fun. But all the guys, J.J. showed a lot of fight today. At least we got a little bit of red up on that board. Just proud of the guys for fighting really hard.

Q. What is the attitude for both of you heading into tomorrow?

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: Win your point.

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, same thing, just go for broke.

Q. J.J., when the American fans are being silenced by European points, what was the biggest challenge to overcome to birdie your final two holes to get the point on the board?

J.J. SPAUN: I just felt like at the end there, birdies weren't going to be enough. But we put the pressure on and hit good shots, and Xander said on the back nine, let's just string good shots together and try to make putts, and that's what we did, and it ended up working out for us.

Q. Where were those pivotal points of perseverance that you and J.J. needed to have to come through clutch today?

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: His two final approach shots. He's a dog. I think everyone that knows him pretty well knows that. He played unbelievably well. It's a tiny, tiny victory in what happened today. Obviously we got beat again in the match. It's going to be a quiet team room. I'm just proud of J.J.; he's a rookie, and that's one of the hardest points you can earn in that fashion, too, so he did a great job.
