Q. Was there something specific before you were struggling with the greens, like reading them, or something you figured out?
CAMERON YOUNG: No. My speed has been awful. Honestly on two of the ones I made on 15 and 16 I hit them both way too hard.
So kind of they're really tricky and they can certainly get away from you without hitting a terrible putt. I feel like I've had some inexcusable three and a half footers coming back after having nine ten, twelve feet for birdie.
Yeah, it was better today kind of once I think I got past trying to make them as much. Yeah, I'm sure it'll be quick tomorrow, so just trying to keep getting closer and closer, and hope I get a feel for them.
Q. Were you aware that you were within a shot of the course record there coming in the last two holes?
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I mean, I know it's 10-under and I knew I was nine. That wasn't my thought. I was just trying to hit it somewhere right of the hole on 17 and hit a couple good shots on 18. Unfortunately had one of my few bad swings of the day on 18.
Q. You talked about how well you're playing. What is going through your mind right now? Is this the best you've ever played?
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I mean, I think I would have to be delusional to say no. I'm playing great. There is not a ton going on in my head, which is I think a very good thing. There is all kinds of stuff, but it's nothing complicated.
I'm thinking about shots and I'm thinking about my execution and that's mainly where my head is at. Just trying to keep myself where I am and hit good shots and kind of stack them together, and I feel like I've done that really well, especially today.
Q. You and Alex overlapped a year at Wake.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yes.
Q. What are your memories of that year and what was the relationship like?
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, he's a friend. We don't talk a ton because he's busy in Europe and I'm mostly over here. Texted him after he won the other day the first time and the second time.
But, yeah, we're very friendly. A pairing with him tomorrow would be a lot of fun. Seeing him out here it's like no time has passed between seeing him in college and now.
Great kid and great to see him playing well. I would love to play with him tomorrow.
Q. You were a senior; he was a freshman. Did he carry your luggage or anything?
CAMERON YOUNG: No, nothing like that. He was too good to be doing any of that kind of stuff. He played in our starting lineup right away. I wouldn't have been the ringleader on making him do any of that stuff anyway.
Q. Cam, won by six strokes last week and obviously near the leaderboard, top of the leaderboard this week. What are you doing so well right now?
CAMERON YOUNG: I'm golfing very well right now. I'm doing a lot of things really well.
It's been something different I think kind of each day, and any of the days I put two or more things together I'm shooting some low rounds.
I've kept myself in tournaments really, really well. Yesterday I could have easily shot 3-over and kind of chipped in, pitched my way around to 1-under.
So it's been -- that's what you do when you play well, you piece it together with what's working. I've been really, really good at taking advantage of good days and turning them into really solid rounds.
Q. Shot on seven, describe what you were facing for the second shot, the par-5.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I had kind of the lip prevented me from starting the ball at the hole, and then I had some trees on the left to kind of deal with.
It's just one of those -- it's not an easy shot with a 7-wood out of a bunker. If there was ever a number it was perfect it was that one.
If I hit it how I meant to it was going to come up like too short kind of on the line I hit it, and if I missed it a little right it was still going to get to the green. If I pulled it it was going to go in that bunker.
It was just one of those really difficult shots to pull off, but at the same time, I felt like the misses were okay and it was worth trying. Just the number if I did hit the shot that I meant to was perfect.
Q. So no thought to laying up?
CAMERON YOUNG: There was a thought, and then Kyle just said, you know, I've seen you hit this shot a million times on the range; just hit it.
Kind of the more we talked about it the more we both got talked into it. You know, I didn't love the layup because it's not easy. That is not a gimme wedge shot.
You have to layup to 85 front probably and the hole was on 27, 30, so you're left with 115 or so to kind of a small shelf back there with a question mark for wind.
So I just didn't love it. The number was perfect for 7-wood.
Q. The bogey at 18 certainly doesn't diminish the 63 in the third round. Really that play out of the fairway bunker on seven to put yourself 28 feet away and get that eagle at the par-5 seventh, enormous during the course of the round on the front nine.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, that one certainly kind of started things. I played a really, really good first six holes and really didn't have much to show for it. I feel like really the first five holes I basically had a 4- to 15-footer on every hole and didn't make any of them. I made the one short one, but felt like I just didn't get much out of it early.
Then to make the putt on seven and have a tap-in on eight, that's where it started to feel like I was going somewhere. Obviously carried that momentum into the back nine.
Q. So we go to the back nine, then at 14 you make birdie, 15, and then 16 from outside of 40 feet away. Awesome at that par-4, 16.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, that one is -- that one is not one you're counting on there. We were operation make four on the tee. That's just one of those holes you know is going to be brutal especially into the wind.
You know, about eight feet out it looked pretty good but I was hoping to hit the hole softly enough to stay in and very fortunate that it did.
Q. Okay. Considering what happened just a week ago, able to close it out on championship Sunday, how you feeling now here in Charlotte as we head to Sunday?
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, my game feels good. I obviously -- as much as playing with a big lead is not easy, I prefer that.
So it's going to be different. I mean I'm going to go chasing and this is also is difficult golf course, so anything can happen. It's just going to be I think about kind of putting one foot in front of the other and seeing where you are come middle of the back nine.
You know, before then nothing changes.
